"The book contains an enormous amount of information much of which is based upon Dr. Harrison's own observations. The style is clear and the presentation log ideal. The monograph is heartily recommended to all who are interested in the study of the circulation. It can be read with profit and it is fair to add with pleasure both by investigator and practitioner." – Robert L. Levy American Heart Journal 1940 Vol. 19 Issue 1 review of the second edition. As for the author "Tinsley 1900–1978 would graduate from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1922 — where he was a classmate roommate and tennis doubles partner of Johns Hopkins' future surgeon-in-chief Alfred Blalock — and ultimately become "one of the most important and pivotal medical doctors in U.S. history" according to his biographer and protege James Pittman Jr. 1927–2014. Harrison is best remembered for Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine published in 1950 reprinted 16 times translated into 14 languages and perhaps the world's most-used and best-selling internal medical text. He was the first chair of medicine and dean of the Medical College of Alabama now part of the University of Alabama at Birmingham" – Neil A. Grauer Johns Hopkins Medicine. 1863026070Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott 1863. xvi 13-604 pages. While known as the first American physician to devote himself entirely to neurology and the author of the first treatise on the subject it was his role in the Civil War and this major work for which he is best remembered. When Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton fired Clement Finley the Surgeon General Abraham Lincoln against Stanton's advice named the 34-year-old Hammond to succeed him with the rank of brigadier general. On April 1962 he became Surgeon General of the Army. He launched many reforms ranging from qualifications of medical personnel importance of ventilation record-keeping and the creation of the Satterlee Hospital. He promoted Jonathan Letterman which brought an efficient ambulance system to the service. He banned mercury from army supplies. Since hygienic standards were still very poor in the United States Army and soldiers often died because of inadequate medical care poor sanitary conditions and lack of attention to proper shelter and nutrition since there was no up-to-date work on the subject he wrote this book to be distributed to all officers and medical personnel. A thorough and detailed book it contains many of the ideas and principles that Hammond instituted in his reform of the army medical service. In writing on morbid habits he warns of the mischief caused by masturbation which causes he notes that "the masturbator shuns society.and evinces an apathy for all kinds of amusements." He discusses all aspects of diet providing charts and comparisons of the requirements in the British and Russian armies. How to keep the alimentary canal in good order is a major concern for the soldier. 203636 measures from the "Sonatas de El Escorial" for piano. 189 x 213 mm. On partial letterhead of the Junta de Cultura Española.

Creased at folds; minor paper loss to foot; two file holes to left margin. "Notable amongst his early works are the modernist Naturaleza muerta Dos sonatas de El Escorial inspired by Soler and Marinero en tierra settings of poems by Alberti which contain some of his most accessible music. Halffter's music follows in the tradition of Falla: the basis is tonal sometimes enriched with bold and witty polytonal inflections; the rhythm is asymmetrical and varied; the style is above all clear and spare. In 1953 in the Tres hojas de album for piano he began to use 12-note serialism the first Mexican composer to do so. This however did not alter the essentially melodic nature of his work." Antonio Iglesias and Juan Orrego-Salas in Grove Music Online.

An attractive example from one of this Mexican composer's most notable works. unknown books

Hagedorn: 51 First edition.

The second part of this book contains many clever problems selected from those which competed in a tournament arranged by Frere the chess editor of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The first part was published without the sanction or approval of Morphy and comprises games with notes copied form the Chess Monthly The Era and other sources without any special acknowledgment. The collection was evidently hurriedly and incompetently made to take advantage of the demand created by Morphy's success in Europe. Hadgedorn.

Born on 8th December 1820 in Brooklyn of a French Creole father and a mother of Irish descent Thomas Frere's interest in chess is sparked in 1827 on seeing "the Turk" Maelzel's automaton chess player at Tammany Hall. The story leaps forward to 1854 with Frere a married man with three children working for the Home Life Insurance Company in Wall Street whilst also operating a printing engraving and publishing business. He witnesses the start of public chess in New York when the owner of Limberger's saloon at the corner of Fulton and Nassau Streets decides to replace the decrepit chess equipment used by two patrons with several new sets and boards. Within three years in excess of fifty players are frequenting the establishment. Moving from Limberger's saloon to Brooklyn in 1856 Frere starts the Brooklyn Chess Club. Frere becomes involved with organizing and running the First American Chess Congress held in New York. Morphy takes first prize in the Grand Tournament ahead of Louis Paulson in second. Paulsen causes a sensation with his feats of blindfold chess. In 1859 Frere publishes the first book about the new American chess sensation Morphy's Games of Chess and Frere's Problem Tournament. During 1858 through 1859 he becomes embroiled in a feud with Daniel W. Fiske Editor of Chess Monthly and lead organizer of the First American Chess Congress regarding Staunton's refusal to contest a match with Morphy.

Condition:

Spine head lightly chipped corners rubbed else a very good copy of an early American chess title.
