1953284434Chicago 1953. First. unbound. very good. Outstanding T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal stationary Chicago August 31 1953 to political adviser and Pulitzer Prize recipient Leland Stowe in part: ".I am baffled by the sudden change of attitude about McCarthy by many people I have talked to but perhaps "baffled" is not the word exactly. At any rate there seems to be a feeling he is slipping fast since his attack on the clergy and for me to proceed too aggressively would be to reinvigorate him because of the Protestant political implications." Stevenson's dilemma: McCarthy a staunch Catholic aligned himself with Joseph P. Kennedy a powerful Democrat and another rabid anti-Communist. The relationship was so strong that McCarthy even dated Kennedy daughters Patricia and Eunice. In addition to this Senator John F. Kennedy who served with McCarthy did not support Kennedy's Republican opponent Henry Cabot Lodge. As all this was happening McCarthy became godfather to Robert F. Kennedy's first child Kathleen and would later select Robert as a Council serving on this committee. After all Joseph Kennedy had an agenda: he would support McCarthy as a national Catholic politician who in return might help pave the way for a younger Kennedy's Presidential candidacy. Fine condition.

American politician and diplomat who served as Governor of Illinois from 1949-1953. In 1952 and 1956 he was selected as the Democratic Party's candidate for President.

unknown books
1956283317Chicago 1956. unbound. very good. T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal letterhead Chicago June 29 1956 to Presidential delegate Bernard Nadel reminding him of the important role he will play in selecting a candidate who will represent the Democratic Party at the up-coming convention. In small part: "Now that the Presidential Primaries are over I want to write to you in your capacity as a delegate to our Party's National Convention. The role you'll play in shaping our Party's course in this fateful year is most important. We must have a Democrat in the White House because the times are too perilous and the stakes too high for the country to run the danger of further Republican part-time management by people who do not represent all of us." Also included: a second T.L.S. 8vo. 1 page personal letterhead Chicago August 10 1956 to Bernard Nadel on the eve of the Democratic National Convention. In part: "Welcome to Chicago! - I am sure you and I as Democrats are resolved that our Party shall display once again to the watching world that united and pioneering concern for human needs which has been our special mission and strength. The decisions we reach the moral leadership we provide America may in sober fact determine the future of humanity" Both items are boldly signed and are in very good condition. Fine content.

American politician and diplomat who received the Democratic Party%u2019s nomination for President in 1952 and 1956.

unknown books
