T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal letterhead Chicago June 29 1956 to Presidential delegate Bernard Nadel reminding him of the important role he will play in selecting a candidate who will represent the Democratic Party at the up-coming convention. In small part: "Now that the Presidential Primaries are over I want to write to you in your capacity as a delegate to our Party's National Convention. The role you'll play in shaping our Party's course in this fateful year is most important. We must have a Democrat in the White House because the times are too perilous and the stakes too high for the country to run the danger of further Republican part-time management by people who do not represent all of us." Also included: a second T.L.S. 8vo. 1 page personal letterhead Chicago August 10 1956 to Bernard Nadel on the eve of the Democratic National Convention. In part: "Welcome to Chicago! - I am sure you and I as Democrats are resolved that our Party shall display once again to the watching world that united and pioneering concern for human needs which has been our special mission and strength. 1953284434Chicago 1953. First. unbound. very good. Outstanding T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal stationary Chicago August 31 1953 to political adviser and Pulitzer Prize recipient Leland Stowe in part: ".I am baffled by the sudden change of attitude about McCarthy by many people I have talked to but perhaps "baffled" is not the word exactly. At any rate there seems to be a feeling he is slipping fast since his attack on the clergy and for me to proceed too aggressively would be to reinvigorate him because of the Protestant political implications." Stevenson's dilemma: McCarthy a staunch Catholic aligned himself with Joseph P. Kennedy a powerful Democrat and another rabid anti-Communist. The relationship was so strong that McCarthy even dated Kennedy daughters Patricia and Eunice. In addition to this Senator John F. Kennedy who served with McCarthy did not support Kennedy's Republican opponent Henry Cabot Lodge. As all this was happening McCarthy became godfather to Robert F. Kennedy's first child Kathleen and would later select Robert as a Council serving on this committee. After all Joseph Kennedy had an agenda: he would support McCarthy as a national Catholic politician who in return might help pave the way for a younger Kennedy's Presidential candidacy. 1937122606Atlanta 1937. unbound. 1 page 11 x 7.25 inches Atlanta June 29 1937. Rare letter signed "Margaret Mitchell Marsh" declining an invitation to a party because it conflicts with her wedding anniversary in full: "Dear Miss Hall: Sue Myrick forwarded to me your invitation and John and I appreciate it so very much. I know the party will be lots of fun and I only wish we could come but Sunday is our wedding anniversary and we have already made plans to spend it with friends. I admit that the temptation to break this engagement is strong because I liked Milledgeville so much when I was there at the Press meeting. And also I would love to attend your party as Prissy. That is the only role my size would warrant. The costume would be cheap too --just a croker sack and ten cents' worth of shoe polish. We do appreciate your invitation so much and I shall look forward to Sue's description of the party." Two horizontal folds and slight foxing; very good condition.

unknown books

Considered the finest achievement in Slavic paroemiology of its time this collection of Ukrainian riddles and proverbs was assembled by the Ukrainian ethnographer folklorist writer and educator Matvii Nomys pseudonym of Matvii Symonov; 1823-1900. The proverbs cover the most diverse spheres of life customs and beliefs of the Ukrainian people and contributed to the development of national consciousness in Ukraine then a part of the Russian Empire. The book is divided into two parts: the first part in 20 chapters contains 14339 proverbs and sayings the smaller second part offers 505 riddles.

The collection includes proverbs collected not only by Nomys but also by other prominent Ukrainian writers and ethnographers such as the brothers Mykola and Vasyl Bilozerski Panteleimon Kulish Vasyl Lazarevsky Stepan Rudansky and the husband and wife folklorists Opanas Markovych and Marko Vovchok. In the 1840s many of these writers belonged to the secret political society called Cyril and Mythodius Brotherhood with Ukrainian national rebirth as its focus. The Brotherhood advocated the abolition of serfdom literacy and education for the broad masses the possibility for all Slavic nations to develop their language and culture and the unification of all Slavic nations with their center in Kiev. The society was quickly apprehended and its members which numbered at about 100 variously arrested and temporarily exiled in 1847. The brief existence of the society 1846-1847 left a mark on the Ukrainian intellectual milieu and many of the participants continued the project of building national consciousness by other means such as through collecting folklore. The publication of this collection gave a powerful impetus to the further development of Ukrainian paremiography with the second edition published in 1885 and a manuscript facsimile released in 1928. The edition was also confiscated following Alexander II's 1876 Ems Ukase which prohibited the use and dissemination of Ukrainian-language documents. This copy from the library of Ukrainian writer Zinovii Bilenko 1909-1979.
