ill., br. La storia della peste è stata accompagnata da una ricca, interessante serie di testi letterari e scientifici, spesso destinati a una grande fortuna tra mondo antico ed età contemporanea. In questo volume l'autore, con un approccio interdisciplinare, esamina da un lato i temi e i protagonisti più importanti del dibattito medico-scientifico, dall'altro si sofferma su opere di carattere letterario e su resoconti di medici, magistrati di sanità e funzionari degli apparati governativi e periferici a volte chiamati a isolare le zone interessate con veri e propri "muri della peste" e con provvedimenti "polizieschi" di inaudita violenza: a partire dalla peste nera del 1347-48 fino al contagio di Noja (Noicàttaro, Bari) del 1815-16, l'ultimo episodio di peste bubbonica dell'Europa occidentale. Una particolare attenzione viene riservata al rapporto fra parole e immagini in preziosi manoscritti miniati e in rari libri a stampa: anche l'apparato iconografico evidenzia, in realtà, il forte impatto esercitato sull'immaginario collettivo da questa terribile malattia che sembra quasi prefigurare gli inquietanti scenari pandemici del nuovo millennio.

In-4°; antiporta calcografica incisa da Thiboust su disegno di Peuget (leggermente rifilata al margine inferiore), e pp. (16), 134, 1 cb, pp. (4); pp. 128, (7), un legno al frontespizio, nel testo capilettera e legni tipografici. legatura in pergamena coeva con dorso in cartonato. timbro a inchiostro all’occhiello. Sebbene apparentemente tradotto dal francese, come si legge al frontespizio, è la prima edizione di quest’opera del padre cappuccino Maurice de Toulon sui metodi di utilizzo dei profumi per allontanare la peste, una pratica che era assai comune fina dai tempi antichi, come si pensava anche che i profumi proteggessero dall’inalazione delle particelle infette presenti nell’aria. L’opera è basata sull’esperienza di Maurice de Toulon durante la peste a Genova nel 1656-57. La prima edizione francese appare un anno più tardi nel 1662, con un altro titolo. Krivatsy 7587.
Napoli, nella stamperia di Giovanni de Simone, 1743, in-8 piccolo, legatura coeva in piena pergamena (lievi difetti sulle cuffie), titolo in oro al dorso, pp. 191, [1]. Le esatte note editoriali presenti sul frontespizio sono le seguenti: in Genova, per Pietro Giovanni Calenzani, 1661. E di nuovo in Napoli, nella stamperia di Giovanni de Simone, 1743. La prima edizione di quest'opera fu pubblicata in italiano a Genova nel 1661 (un anno prima di quella francese: 1662); nella prima parte si tratta di "Infermierie e quarantene; la seconda parte è dedicata all'uso dei profumi nella prevenzione del contagio: una pratica che era assai comune fin dai tempi antichi. L'opera è basata sull'esperienza dell'autore durante la peste di Genova del 1656-57. In questa edizione è aggiunta una consulta del medico Carlo Pignataro, fatta nella peste di Napoli dl 1656, ove tra gli altri rimedi, è posto l'uso della neve. Qualche fioritura. Raro: solo 4 esemplari censiti in ICCU.

Edizione veneziana dell'opera di questo importante medico inglese (1624-1689), considerato il maggior esponente della medicina inglese del suo secolo per aver dato vita a una nuova scuola clinica basata sullo studio accurato della sintomatologia. Egli, in un'epoca in cui iatrofisici e iatrochimici disputavano fra loro sempre piu' allontanandosi dall'osservazione diretta del malato, riaffermo' la necessita' di riportare la medicina sulla strada dell'osservazione e dell'esperienza, in omaggio ai principi ippocratici. In questa edizione, compaiono inoltre: la Mechanica morborum et medicamentorum di Giovan Battista Mazino, l'Epistola physicomedica di Antonio Celestino, la Dissertatio de salivatione mercuriali di Bartolomeo Boschetti e un'interessante appendice di Sydenham con descrizione della peste torinese del 1722 e la storia epidemica dell'Ungheria.
