Di nobile famiglia milanese, nacque in Milano il 27 febbraio 1552 da Francesco e da Giulia Ripa, figlia di Gian Francesco Ripa, giureconsulto pavese. Nel 1614 iniziò la pubblicazione (complessivamente nove libri) di una delle sue più utili opere mediche Animadversiones et cautiones medicas caratterizzate da un approccio pragmatico alla scienza e da indipendenza di giudizio. Le sue riflessioni e avvertenze abbondano di frasi assai giudiziose contraddicendo senza riguardo le opinioni delle scuole ove non in accordo con l’esperienza. Interessanti le sue considerazioni sulla cura delle ferite.
