1919262591New Haven: the magazine 1919. Magazine. Pp.253-255 of entire magazine approx 45 pages including ads softbound in 9x6 inch terracotta wraps detached. Complete issue somewhat uglified with heavy rust-stain from staples; stain affects a line of very old glue applied to left edge in an attempt to keep wraps fastened to textblock. Wraps detached anyway with ragged margins at the split. Reference copy; we suspect that remnants of candor show through. Note a slight disparity in date of publication doubtless trivial. Luce contributes a cocky reprise of Senior Class laments perhaps jauntier that most such; it is built around an apparently sincere appreciation of an Archibald MacLeish poem that denies that there are spiritual dimensions to natural life. the magazine unknown books

Among the topics covered is the use of yellow journalism techniques created by William Randolph Hearst. Sinclair called The Brass Check 'the most important and most dangerous book I have ever written.'" Though he attracted much attention during his life for his irascible aggressive personality editorship of famous periodicals and friendship with the talented and famous he is remembered mainly for his multiple-volume memoir My Life and Loves which was banned in countries around the world for its sexual explicitness."

And in this volume Sinclair in his inscription gives a nod to Harris' periodicals. 192633685Torpelund pr. Eskebjerg: Chr. Olsen PN MN. 26-52 1926. Folio. 3 pp. 1f. violin part.

Light uniform browning; slightly creased. First Edition. Rare 1 copy located outside of Denmark at NYPL.

Christian Olsen was a folklore collector from a well-known and successful Danish family who had their large farm and estate "Torpelund" near Eskebjerg in Zealand. The polka was apparently taught to Olsen's father by a travelling violinist who had learned it from Bull himself. Famed Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull 1810-1880 was so popular in his day that many dubious publications appeared under his name but he wrote down little of his own music and published even less. Whether the tune that Olsen recorded has a true connection to Bull is unknown but highly unlikely. Chr. Olsen [PN MN. 26-52] unknown books
