Album 270 x 210 mm 10¾ x 8¼ in; 49 silver gelatin photographs with locations in ink on verso map in pen and ink; brown textured covers with title in ink on upper side black plastic spine bar.<br /> The night of May 10-11 1968 known as The Night of the Barricades was marked by fierce clashes between student protesters and police in the area around the Sorbonne. After police blocked protesters from reaching the ORTF Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française students began tearing up cobblestones and building barricades. Around 2am on May 11 police launched a charge and a violent confrontation continued until dawn. Nearly 500 students were arrested and hundreds more were hospitalised including 250 police officers. Far from quelling support the clashes deepened public sympathy for the students. What had started as a university-led movement for educational reform soon spread to engulf all of France.<br /><br />The photographs in this album show the aftermath of the night's events with the hand drawn map showing the areas around the Sorbonne centred on rue Gay Lussac with symbols showing the location of the barricades and burnt-out cars.<br /> [Paris], [1968]. unknown

1941403859New York: The Viking Press 1941. 8vo. 185 pp. 60 black-and-white photographs by John Swope. Original decorated cloth. A very good copy without the jacket. FIRST EDITION. A wonderful association copy warmly inscribed by 8 of the 10 members of the first crew of the B-24 Liberator Bomber "Billie B" to the woman for whom the plane was named by its first pilot 1st Lt. Joseph Robins Littlepage. Nearly full-page inscriptions by the pilot navigator and co-pilot in blue ink on the front pastedown and the front free endpaper as well as by the crew engineer assistant crew engineer radioman assistant radioman and one of the gunners in blue ink on the rear free endpapers. The pilot's inscription reads "To Billie - / From the skipper to her namesake. There isn't much I could tell you other than we are just another combat crew tryin to bring our standards up to the finest ship ever built 42-40076 the Billie "B" / JR Littlepage / First Pilot" The navigator's inscription reads "May 16 1943 / Hi Billie - / Tho I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you I feel that I already know you. However I still have hopes of meeting you in the near future. In the meantime I'll keep doing my darndest to navigate your name sake safely to her targets and back again. / Best wishes from the navigator / James H. Scholl / Gonzales Texas" The co-pilot's inscription reads "Hello Billie - / We are all waiting for the day that we can introduce you to the "Billie B." However from the way Joe talks it won't be a fair comparison. We will all be seeing you. / Until then - George L. Goddard / co-pilot". The inscription by S/Sgt. Harold A. Denison Asst Crew Engineer is a charming 4-line attempt at poetry. The other inscriptions are by S/Sgt. Thomas R. Brady Jr. Gunner T/Sgt. Cyril B. Cluff Jr. Radioman/Gunner and S/Sgt. Clifford H. Muhlhausen Asst. Radioman. Below that of S/Sgt. Harold Hutton Justus Crew Engineer is this moving addition by the pilot "Note - / I'd rather fly without one of the engines than leave him on the ground loyal to the crew faithful at his work and loves the ship as I do -- the Air Corps has none as good - the country none better - / J.R.L." In addition the pilot has annotated 49 of the 60 B&W photos the accompany Steinbeck's journalistic account of the training of a typical flight crew. The notes are often amusing: the captions of pictures of a B-17 and a B-24 on facing pages were modified to read "Boeing B-17E commonly known as the Flying Fortress Junk Heaps" and "Consolidated B-24 commonly known as the Liberator Billie 'B'"; in many cases they are merely informative aimed at telling her name sake about crew activities and features of the plane; and sometimes touching beneath the chapter opening photograph of a pilot 1st Lt. Littlepage has added "And don't think he's not scared". The only members not represented are 1st Lt. Leonard Barton Conway Bombadier and S/Sgt. William Posledni Gunner. The newly commissioned B-24 Liberator Bomber "Billie B" 42-40076 was assigned to the 13th Air Force 307th Bombardment Group "The Long Rangers" 370th Bomber Squadron and was first stationed at Carney Field Guadalcanal on May 29 1943 with this crew flying missions until July 3 when the plane was grounded for repairs. On July 6 the 10-man crew was assigned to another plane for a bombing mission to Bougainville Island and the plane and crew was lost at sea on its way back from the Philippines. The "Billie B" was assigned to a replacement crew and went on to serve valiantly in the South Pacific until the end of August 1944. . <br/><br/> The Viking Press hardcover books

Presentation Copy from the Author. 8vo. 332pp. Original unclipped dustjacket. Stated First Edition. A very good copy. Binding is strong interior fresh & clean. Boards show slight shelfwear & minor bumps at the corners. Jacket is very good showing edgewear & light chipping. A wonderful presentation copy given by Lane to her friend Elsie Jackson in England. Great lengthy inscription & signature on the title page. Lane was the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder author of the "Little House" bo oks. Books inscribed by Rose Lane Wilder or Laura Ingalls Wilder 1867-1957 are very uncommon. Rose Wilder Lane 1886 -1968 Danbury Connecticut was an American journalist travel writer novelist & political theorist & the only surviving chil d of Laura Ingalls Wilder now the better known writer. Lane's accomplishments remain however quite remarkable. She is considered a seminal force behind the American Libertarian Party. By the time the first Little House book was published by Laura I ngalls Wilder 1932 Rose had already published 10 works of biography & fiction. The daughter's influence on the Mother's work is unmistakable & her contribution to the entire Little House series well documented as Rose collaborated multidimensionall y in the crafting of the entire series. Of course it would be even better if you could come personally. So far the results are not so clear that they can be easily discussed in writing. The lye residue arrived yesterday. After lengthy deliberation regarding Privy Councilor Pl. I have gained conviction that if you were to write a few cordial non-official lines they would find the same reception. 193370581New York 1933. Very good. A single page manuscript letter on Hotel Algonquin stationary dated September 30 1933. There is a little toning and wear and a staple has been removed from above the printed header otherwise in very good condition. In the letter addressed to "My dear President Roosevelt" Sinclair declares his plan to "contest at the primaries the Democratic nomination for Governor upon a program to 'end poverty in California'" and asks whether he and his wife could meet with the Roosevelts to discuss the matter further. It was written only a few weeks after Sinclair visited Roosevelt at Hyde Park where an economic summit was held over the Labor Day weekend. Upton Sinclair's 1934 California gubernatorial campaign is regarded as a watershed moment in American politics. Following two previous unsuccessful attempts at running for the governorship of California as a member of the Socialist Party the muckraking author of The Jungle 1906 had been encouraged by the election of Roosevelt in 1932 to change his affiliation to the Democrats in September 1933. In his book "The Campaign of the Century: Upton Sinclair's Race for Governor of California and the Birth of Media Politics" 1992 Greg Mitchell writes "Sinclair's candidacy challenged perplexed and ultimately embarrassed Franklin Roosevelt. The muckraker emerged as a political messiah at a tender hour for the White House. After an auspicious start the New Deal was foundering. Progressives implored FDR to move to the left businessmen and bankers exerted pressure on the right. Sinclair put the profoundly ambivalent President on the spot: if he endorsed his party's candidate in California FDR's critics would accuse him of supporting socialism; if he didn't some of his friends might call him a coward." In the context of the Great Depression the "End Poverty in California" movement formed the basis of Sinclair's campaign calling for a large-scale public works program and reforms to taxes and pensions - a vision he laid out in "I Governor of California and How I Ended Poverty: A True Story of the Future" 1933. Theodore Dreiser called it "the most impressive political phenomenon that America yet produced" while the New York Times described it as "the first serious movement against the profit system in the United States." Sinclair's campaign gained widespread support and formed his most successful attempt at elected office gaining nearly 38% of the vote. Vociferously opposed by Hollywood studio bosses the coalition of forces against Sinclair was one of the first to employ modern methods of political campaigning typified by the use of external media and publicity consultants. Ultimately abandoned by Roosevelt and defeated by Frank Merriam his Republican rival he recorded his experiences in "I Candidate for Governor: And How I Got Licked" 1935. Despite his defeat Sinclair recorded twice as many votes as any previous Democratic candidate for governor in California. As Mitchell notes "Roosevelt may have revived the Democratic party in the state in 1932 but it was EPIC that established it as a progressive force." It also exerted profound influence on Roosevelt who drew on EPIC's income and corporate tax structures to support his New Deal programs. Even Merriam as governor took some of Sinclair's tax and pension ideas confirming the liberal-leftist ideology as a significant force in California politics. unknown books

Good condition organized in plastic sheets in an old red vinyl three-ring binder.</p><p>The 1968 Democratic National Convention of 1968 held in Chicago was a landmark event in American political history. John M. Bailey of Connecticut who had helped to orchestrate Johnson's landslide victory in 1964 oversaw the contentious presidential campaign of 1968 in which Robert Kennedy Hubert Humphrey Eugene McCarthy and others sought the Democratic nomination. This collection of papers to and by longtime Democratic National Committee Chairman John M. Bailey includes:</p><p>• Eugene McCarthy 3-page telegram requesting an opportunity appear before the Committee to present his argument that "the administration's course in Vietnam is dangerous and wrong."</p><p>• Various papers by the McCarthy campaign concerning its goals and requesting information concerning officers seating and other logistical matters at the convention. In the end the party was less than helpful to the McCarthy campaign instead unifying behind Humphrey. These papers help to reveal the struggles of the McCarthy campaign to present its dissenting views.</p><p>• Convention press kit containing biographies maps flyers and a poster.</p><p>• Correspondence concerning credentials and passes.</p><p>• Correspondence and press releases concerning the status of the campaign ranging from state delegates voicing their concerns to a copy of Bailey's memorandum to the White House reporting on developments state-by-state.</p><p>• Copies of a letter signed by Kennedy two weeks before his assassination with a note stating that his family agreed to its distribution.</p><p>The 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago saw protests and riots outside the convention and a bitterly contested fight inside the convention hall ultimately leading to the nomination of Hubert Humphrey who lost to Nixon in November.</p><br />
