Please inquire for more information.

Wheeler & Woolsey were an American vaudeville comedy double act who performed together in comedy films from the late 1920s. The team comprised Bert Wheeler of New Jersey and Robert Woolsey of Illinois. The Broadway theatre performers were initially teamed as the comedy relief for the 1927 Broadway musical Rio Rita and came to Hollywood to reprise these roles for the film version. During production RKO signed Bert Wheeler to a movie contract but not Robert Woolsey. It wasn't until the financial returns for Rio Rita came in that the studio signed both Woolsey and Dorothy Lee for further films alongside Wheeler. Wheeler & Woolsey continued to make very popular comedy feature films from 1930 until 1937 all for RKO Radio Pictures%u2014except the 1933 Columbia Pictures release So This Is Africa which was made during a contract dispute with RKO.

unknown

1996219091Munchen: Schirmer/Mosel 1996. Brossura wrappers. Ottimo Fine. Introduzione di John Coplan. 335 fotografie in bianco e nero di Weegee. Biografia Bibliografia. 4to cm 29 x 23. pp. 335. Ottimo Fine. . Legendary photojournalist Weegee's unflinching eye led him to territory few other photographers of his time dared to go. His New York was not the glamorous world of nightclubs and bustling sidewalks but of the back alleys and forgotten tenements that bore witness to the city's tragedy and violence. Weegee's New York is a city wounded by the Great Depression in the throes of unemployment and poverty of crime corruption and prostitution. Taken mostly at night and marked by the characteristically harsh artificial light that cast telltale shadows on their subjects these photographs of crime victims homeless vagrants petty thieves and resolute policemen document the gritty reality of Weegee's world. The first news photographer permitted a police radio in his car Weegee would race through Manhattan's streets after midnight often beating the cops to the scene of the crime. The next morning his pictures would scream from the pages of the Daily News and the Daily Mirror. They still jump from the page today with a restless an immediacy and intense edginess that has yet to be surpassed. The 335 photographs collected in this volume tell a story of New York during one of its most violent and exciting periods. They also tells the story of the man behind the camera whose passion curiosity and humanity belie his role as uninvolved bystander. More than a record of superb photojournalism Weegee's New York is a te! stament to a man who refused to look away. Schirmer/Mosel, unknown
2006171127Cambridge Mass. : MIT Press 2006. First Edition. Hardback. An exceptional copy in the original color printed boards. Particularly and uncommonly well-preserved; tight bright clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new.; 8vo 8"" - 9"" tall; 324 pages; Description: xvi 324 p. : ill. ; 24 cm. Subjects: Evolution Biology --Mathematical models. Computational biology --Evolutionary computation --Evolution --Models Theoretical. Computational Biology. Series: The Vienna series in theoretical biology. Summary: No biological concept has had greater impact on the way we view ourselves and the world around us than the theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin's masterful contribution was to provide an algorithmic model a formal step-by-step procedure of how adaptation may take place in biological systems. However the simple process of linear incremental improvement that he described is only one algorithmic possibility and certain biological phenomena provide the possibility of implementing alternative processes. In Compositional Evolution Richard Watson uses the tools of computer science and computational biology to show that certain mechanisms of genetic variation such as sex gene transfer and symbiosis allowing the combination of preadapted genetic material enable an evolutionary process compositional evolution that is algorithmically distinct from the Darwinian gradualist framework. After reviewing the gradualist framework of evolution and outlining the analogous principles at work in evolutionary computation Watson describes the compositional mechanisms of evolutionary biology and provides computational models that illustrate his argument. He uses models such as the genetic algorithm as well as novel models to explore different evolutionary scenarios comparing evolution based on spontaneous point mutation sexual recombination and symbiotic encapsulation. He shows that the models of sex and symbiosis are algorithmically distinct from simpler stochastic optimization methods based on gradual processes. Finally Watson discusses the impact of compositional evolution on our understanding of natural evolution and similarly the utility of evolutionary computation methods for problem solving and design.
