192633685Torpelund pr. Eskebjerg: Chr. Olsen PN MN. 26-52 1926. Folio. 3 pp. 1f. violin part.

Light uniform browning; slightly creased. First Edition. Rare 1 copy located outside of Denmark at NYPL.

Christian Olsen was a folklore collector from a well-known and successful Danish family who had their large farm and estate "Torpelund" near Eskebjerg in Zealand. The polka was apparently taught to Olsen's father by a travelling violinist who had learned it from Bull himself. Famed Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull 1810-1880 was so popular in his day that many dubious publications appeared under his name but he wrote down little of his own music and published even less. Whether the tune that Olsen recorded has a true connection to Bull is unknown but highly unlikely. Chr. Olsen [PN MN. 26-52] unknown books

196840516Paris: np 1968. 55 x 43cm. Image of a silhouetted grinning male figure with an enlarged nose reading "Pom Pom La Chielit" which loosely translates to "Pom Pom the Shitty Mess". The nickname "Pom Pom" refers to Georges Pompidou the then Prime Minister and top aid to President Charles de Gaulle. The term "chienlit" was brought to notoriety by de Gaulle in an angry speech during the student protests when he used the vernacular term as a scatological pun "La reforme oui la che-en-lit non" meaning "Reform yes but chaos no." Subsequently the students reused the expression on leaflets and posters where silhouettes of political leaders were accompanied by confrontational slogans.

np unknown books

14228Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A printed greeting from the important German pianist reproduced in her handwriting on a small card with a small halftone photograph. Two sayings about music are printed on the left one attributed to Beethoven and Ney's signature is printed on the right below her picture. Translated from the German: "The purpose of music is that God should not be forgotten. Beethoven: I recognize only one sign of man's superiority: goodness." A similar quotation is often attributed to Tolstoy. In very fine condition. 8.25 x 6 inches 21 x 15.5 cm.
Elly Ney was one of the 20th century's outstanding pianists. Of her great performing Willhelm Kempff wrote: "My ears still hear her melodious voice with its unmistakable hint of her Rhineland origins which had the gift of establishing immediate contact with everyone she spoke to. This happened even more intensely when she stepped onto the concert platform. Just one mysterious chord Beethoven's D minor sonata for instance and the listener was drawn into her magnetic field. What then ensued cannot and should not be described in words nor should it be scientifically dissected. Those who had ears heard for themselves. But that was by no means the end of the matter. A realisation continued to resonate in her listeners' hearts as it had begun to resonate from the moment this greatest of performers stepped onto the platform - the realisation that artistry of this quality draws its strength from roots that have their being in the unfathomable depths of the human soul." unknown books
