Prima ristampa del luglio 1972, identica a quella del 10 febbraio dello stesso anno, della prima edizione italiana di «Chicago Conspiracy Trial Testimony», trascrizione della deposizione di Allen Ginsberg durante il processo del 1969 ai leader della protesta contro l’allora presidente degli Stati Uniti Lyndon Johnson e la guerra in Vietnam, avvenuta a Chicago tra il 25 e il 29 ottobre 1968, in occasione della “Convention” del Partito Democratico. L’intento dei dimostranti era quello di tenere un “Festival della vita” al Lincoln Park con incontri, workshop e reading poetici, nonostante la mancata autorizzazione da parte delle autorità cittadine. La pacifica e gioiosa protesta si risolse a quel punto in un brutale attacco da parte della polizia e in centinaia di arresti che culminarono, un anno dopo, nel famoso processo ai “Chicago Seven”, ovvero ai sette attivisti principalmente coinvolti nell’organizzazione della manifestazione. Chiamato a testimoniare a favore degli imputati dalla difesa, Ginsberg offrì un memorabile ritratto di sé, delle ragioni del proprio impegno politico nonché una prova di straordinaria, a tratti persino ingenua, sincerità. O, più semplicemente, una prova di intelligente, consapevole, corrosiva ironia non priva di pietà nei confronti di chi lo stava interrogando e dell’autorità nel suo complesso. Arricchiscono l’opera due interventi della curatrice del volume Fernanda Pivano.
