1855LTH26-E-1London: Edward Moxon 1855. Leather. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Unamed. A selection of pieces from Hood's Comic Annual in a leather binding. With frontispiece portrait. The series of the Comic Annual dating from 1830 was a kind of publication at that time popular which Hood undertook and continued almost unassisted for several years. Under that somewhat frivolous title he treated all the leading events of the day in caricature without personal malice and with an under-current of sympathy. In a half-calf binding. Externally sound though with some rubbing and the occasional mark. One hinge slightly strained. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and mainly clean though with some tidemarks to the first few pages including frontispiece. Good Edward Moxon hardcover

His chief work History of British Commerce and of the Economic Progress of the British Nation 1763-1870 is considered to be a partisan account of British economic development. Size is 180mm x 115mm. 1848ABE-1355835979Edward Moxon Londom 1848 Hood was associated with a number of magazines throughout his life: the London Magazine and New Monthly Magazine as an editor and the Athenaeum as a contributor. He also published a magazine called Hood s Own or Laughter from Year to Year and released the Comic Annual series. As a member of the London literary scene he was familiar with Hartley Coleridge Thomas De Quincy William Hazlitt Charles Lamb and William Wordsworth. First printing of the third revised issue volume one of two published in MDCCCXLVIII. Full leather and very beautiful indeed with ornate spine and an elegant restrained cover. Beautifully hand marbled text block edges and end papers. A solid copy of an often abused book with one flaw - the cover board is loose. It is not detached but it is friable. This copy is otherwise clean and tight and the majority of pages appear unopened. Very nice firm example of high quality leather binding. End papers are not cracked and the three text block edges are all exquisitely hand marbled. Title is indented upon one section of the hubbed spine. Very attractive and still with its frontispiece portrait which ifor some reason is often absent! An attractive example of book production. The 1842 edition for 'The Comic Annual'.Much of this volume is dedicated to 'Miss Kilmansegg And Her Precious Leg' a satire poem about Miss Kilmansegg a spoilt daughter of a banker who insists on having an artificial limb made out of gold after losing one of her legs in a riding accident.Thomas Hood was a poet and humorist who regularly contributed to 'The London Magazine' and 'Punch'. Though Hood occasionally published serious works his successes were from his humorous poems. 'Comic Annual' was a publication that Hood ran from 1830 publishing caricatures of modern day with a serious malice and incessant puns.Illustrated with eleven plates and twenty-four in-text illustrations by John Leech.Collated bound without one plate to face page 96.Fourteen pages of publisher's adverts to the rear. in the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Fading to the spine and to the extremities of the boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spots. The sales spiel is illustrated with => steel-engraved views and vignettes printed in dark blue and dark green. A tipped-in slip advertises B.F. Taylor's general merchandise store in Wheelock VT. Publisher's half-tone color-printed paper wrappers as above with a river scene glowing in the "eye" of one of the pansies; spine rubbed one tiny spot of staining or fading near front upper edge. Titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War" this General Order consists of Townsend's report of a prisoner exchange arranged between Generals William T. Sherman and John Bell Hood that took place in Rough and Ready Georgia on September 19 22 28 and 30 1864. "United States prisoners received -- 146 commissioned officers. 212 non-commissioned officers. 770 privates. In all equivalent to 2047 privates. Confederate prisoners received -- 128 commissioned officers. 225 non-commissioned officers. 979 privates. In all equivalent to 2045 privates." How these numbers add up to 2047 and 2045 privates is beyond us -- must be the Old Math. Accompanied by a fine modern circa 1960 glossy 8" X 10" photograph a superbly done reprint of the well-known head-and-shoulders portrait of John Bell Hood in Confederate uniform.
