A collection of lyrics short stories articles and reflections from the early volumes of Fun. To the preface it is noted that 'such books will not only be agreeable travelling companions for the excursionist tourist and holiday-maker but wi.ll form pleasant home-companions.' Selected by the editor of Fun Tom Hood. Hood was an English humorist and playwright. In a full calf binding with blind stamping to the board edges. Externally smart with small patches of rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm after front endpaper. All three spines with notable wear partial loss of title all stable. Includes the bookplate of Harry Buxton Forman the notable antiquarian bookseller and forger of Georgian and Victorian first editions. This copy was sold at his estate sale at Anderson Galleries New York August 1920 lot 446. Tylney Hall by Thomas Hood is one of the earliest English works to feature black characters in a historical drama in positive roles. This work was published in 1834 the same year that slavery was abolished in the United Kingdom. A set of two hardcover books bound in full polished calf with gilt-decorated spines. gilt dentelles gilt top edges and marbled endpapers. Very good condition! A fewight scuff marks on the spines slightly marring the gilt decorations but not severely disrupting their overall overall beauty. Edges lightly rubbed and tiny age spots on the boards. On volume II cracks are just starting to form where the front cover attaches to the spine but the board is still securely enough attached for normal handling. A previous owner's bookplate is inside both volumes' back covers. In volume II the bottom corners are chipped off pages 229-232 not affecting the text. Otherwise text unmarked and binding secure in both volumes. From the library of Sir David Salomons 1797-1873 the first Jewish Sheriff of London and later Mayor of London. Seven attractive volumes containing the works of Thomas Hood edited with notes by his son. Chronologically arranged this set contains all the works published by Hood between 1921 and 1845 including his best known poems 'The Song of the Shirt' and 'Bridge of Sighs' as well as his novel Tylney Hall. Whilst Hood was primarily a comic poet who wrote humorously on many contemporary issues he is also prone to reflective and sentimental verse. With a small tear to the front free endpaper of volume I. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Samuel Clement Burchell Jr. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Robert Watchorn. Watchorn was an English-American coal miner and was named secretary of the National Miners' Union in 1888. As well as fighting against abuses of child labour in Pennsylvania factories Watchorn was also appointed US Immigration Commissioner and whilst he was an advocate of immigrant restrictions he criticised commonplace slurs used in the service upon his dismissal. With a binder's stamp to the verso of the front endpaper. Bound by Tout & Sons. Rebound in a contemporary quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally smart. A little rubbing to the front board of volume II with some tiny white marks to the front board of volume V. With some very light rubbing to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. First American edition of the humorous and somewhat surreal tale of a posh humanized pig his adventures in the city published the same year as the London first. Thomas Hood is known for his humorous poems that appeared in "Punch"although he also wrote more sentimental pieces. PRECOCIOUS PIGGY was originally a story he told to his young son Tom and daughter Frances. After Hood's death Tom wrote down the story and illustrated it; the original manuscript is now in the Huntington Library. Hood's daughter Frances Freeling Broderip a children's author rising in popularity at the time of PRECOCIOUS PIGGY'S publication tenderly prefaces the story. 7.5'' x 5.5''. Original pink pictorial wrappers. Illustrations to every page inconsistently and somewhat crudely hand-colored. 20 pages printed one side only. Some dampstaining to wrappers and shallow chipping at corners; spine reinforced. Light foxing to text. Remarkably intact. Thornton and Moffitt unknown

With a portrait frontispiece of Hood to the first volume. Thomas Hood wrote regularly for The London Magazine the Athenaeum and Punch. In half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally all volumes are smart with a small amount of light rubbing to the head and tail of spines. Small loss to the head of spine to volume VII.
