The Rajah of Burdwan reserved one copy as did Cambridge University and the Royal Library of Berlin. The East India Company ordered thirty. The lithographs were executed by the legendary botanical illustrator Walter Hood Fitch who for decades was the sole draftsman and lithographer used by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Fitch adapted drawings by the botanist Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker and by Indian artists working under the direction of J.F. Cathcart. Hooker had traveled through central and eastern Himalaya from 1847 to 1849 collecting around 7000 species of plants on the journey. His Rhododendrons of the Sikkim-Himalaya 1849–51 began a rhododendron craze among British gardeners and was also illustrated by the skilled hand of Fitch. Hooker was appointed director of Kew Gardens in 1865 and held the post for twenty years. As a close friend of Charles Darwin he had the distinction of being the first audience for Darwin's theory of natural selection.

The bookplate in this copy is that of Dr. Paul Jay Bowman 1893 - 1985 a charter member of the American Rhododendron Society. Bowman was drawn to northern California by its rhododendrons and ran the Redwood Coast Hospital in Fort Bragg for over forty years. A lovely book with a nice provenance. Lowell Reeve unknown

An exhibitor at the Society of Artists and the Free Society in the 1760s Hood is known in particular for large drawings of this type achieved in "Indian ink". The drawing of the Triton shows the ship in high seas off "Java head" in January 1752. Seven parts bound in one. 4 xv 2 pp. Illustrated title. 48 hand coloured lithographed plates by Fitch two hand coloured lithographed maps on one sheet mounted albumen photograph by Bourne. Half green morocco and cloth spine lettered in gilt with raised bands marbled endpapers original wrappers bound in at rear

A magisterial work on one of the most beautiful of all plant families.

The monograph was instigated by Henry Elwes a gentleman plant-collector traveler and gardener whose interest in botany had been sparked by a visit to the Himalayan region the journey itself was inspired by reading Hooker's Himalayan Journals. In the garden at his home in Colesbourne Gloucestershire he was able to grow many of the members of the Lilium genus and was a recognized expert in the field. However to ensure that the text was as accurate as possible and that the range of lilies was as complete as possible he consulted the greatest botanical experts in the field for help in writing the text. This level of excellence was continued with the illustrations and Elwes was able to carry through his plan to illustrate the monograph with hand-coloured plates by the best available botanical artist with each member of the genus shown full-size. Between March 1877 and May 1880 subscribers received seven parts at a total cost of seven guineas illustrated with 48 plates by W. H. Fitch. Walter Hood Fitch 1817-1892 had his first illustration published in 1834 and throughout most of the remaining part of the nineteenth century produced over 9600 plates for the greatest British botanical publications. Sir Joseph Hooker called him an "incomparable botanical artist" with his "unrivalled skill in seizing the natural character of a plant." The plates to the present work proved to be what Blunt calls the "most important achievement of Fitch's later career" Art of Botanical Illustration 264.

Nissen BBI 594; Great Flower Books 1990 94; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 1664. This edition shows that the move to abolish the death penalty worldwide has continued to gather pace despite a few set-backs and that international organizations and human rights treaties have increased the pressure on retentionist countries. It also explores how in some parts of the world the range of crimes subject to the death penalty remains wide and the number of executions considerable and how although much still remains to be done there have been further developments in securing protections for those facing the death penalty in retentionist countries. Roger Hood has brought up to date his reviews of studies which shed light on the realities of capital punishment especially as regards arbitrariness and discrimination in its infliction. He also looks further at claims that the death penalty is a unique deterrent to murder and other serious crimes and at the role of public opinion in the debate on capital punishment. -- with a bonus offer-- . 1793003579Original letter. NELSON Horatio; HOOD Admiral Samuel Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent written from HMS Victory off Toulon Road 20 November 1793. One leaf written on both sides folio 340 × 190 mm written in a secretarial hand and signed by Hood on the reverse side. Paper browned and water-stained multiple edge losses several fold splits and small holes fragile but just about legible throughout. A fair condition letter. Despite its distressed condition this is an exceptional field-worn survivor of one of the pivotal naval operations of the French Revolutionary War directly connecting Hood Nelson and the rise of Napoleon. Writing from his flagship Victory Hood laments the failure of his correspondent to send adequate reinforcements to the besieged allied garrison in Toulon: "It is extremely painful to me to observe that your Excellency's backwardness in sending succours to the full extent of the powers of the Garrison. is most truly dispiriting I wish it may not prove disastrous in the extreme." He warns that "five or six hundred more men by the Terrible or Egmont would have been of far greater service than as many thousands can possibly be a month hence" and closes in frustration that "at this moment I only received from Gibraltar about 103 of British" signing off "Your Excellency's most obedient humble Servant Hood." The letter dates from the critical final weeks of the Toulon campaign when Hood and his subordinate officers-including the young Captain Horatio Nelson then commanding HMS Agamemnon-attempted to hold the port against Republican forces commanded in part by a little-known artillery officer Napoleon Bonaparte. Within a month of this letter the allied defence collapsed and Hood was forced to evacuate his fleet marking both Nelson's first combat distinction and the opening act of Napoleon's rise to power. .
