The study was submitted to the faculty of the graduate school at the University of Maryland in 1979 to partially fulfill the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy. It contains the history of the French republican's values during the world wars with a specific focus on family ideals how schools and prisons were affected and the aftermath of the wars. Included are scanned photographs from the National Archives which include some prominent figures like Admiral Descottes-Genon Admiral Hector Violette General Gouraud Marine Georges Leygues and more. This is an extremely scarce privately and lavishly printed prospectus for a planned luxury golf resort community in coastal South Carolina near Myrtle Beach being developed by a group headed by John T. Woodside between 1926 and 1930. Portions of the planned development were built The Ocean Forest Hotel was completed in 1930 and demolished in 1974 and the Ocean Golf Course and Country Club - now known as Pine Lakes Country Club - were completed by 1930 but the Great Depression put a stop to the development. "Although the Woodside Brothers did not see their plans for Arcady come to fruition they did build the first golfing facility in Myrtle Beach and paved the way for the town to become the golfing Mecca it is today" - from the Myrtle Beach Master Plan. Thomas Hood is known for his humorous poems that appeared in "Punch" although he also wrote more sentimental pieces. After Hood's death Tom recorded the story and illustrated it; the original manuscript is now in the Huntington Library. As to the book: 4to. 6151 5 pp. With publisher's cloth front cover and spine bound in. The hundred Griset drawings are all hand-colored in this copy. Whilst Hood was primarily a comic poet who wrote humorously on many contemporary issues he is also prone to reflective and sentimental verse. With a small tear to the front free endpaper of volume I. The set previously belonged to the library of Samuel Clement Burchell Jr. Prior owner's bookplate to the recto of the front endpaper of all volumes. The set previously belonged to the library of Robert Watchorn. Watchorn was an English-American coal miner and was named secretary of the National Miners' Union in 1888. As well as fighting against abuses of child labour in Pennsylvania factories Watchorn was also appointed US Immigration Commissioner and whilst he was an advocate of immigrant restrictions he criticised commonplace slurs used in the service upon his dismissal. With a binder's stamp to the verso of the front endpaper. Bound by Tout & Sons. Rebound in a contemporary quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally smart. A little rubbing to the front board of volume II with some tiny white marks to the front board of volume V. With some very light rubbing to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. A set of two hardcover books bound in full polished calf with gilt-decorated spines. gilt dentelles gilt top edges and marbled endpapers. Very good condition! A fewight scuff marks on the spines slightly marring the gilt decorations but not severely disrupting their overall overall beauty. Edges lightly rubbed and tiny age spots on the boards. On volume II cracks are just starting to form where the front cover attaches to the spine but the board is still securely enough attached for normal handling. A previous owner's bookplate is inside both volumes' back covers. In volume II the bottom corners are chipped off pages 229-232 not affecting the text. Otherwise text unmarked and binding secure in both volumes. From the library of Sir David Salomons 1797-1873 the first Jewish Sheriff of London and later Mayor of London.
