This single sheet portrait of John Wesley Hardin was apparently produced to be inserted into copies of Hardin's autobiography as printed under this correct portrait is the following: The Picture On Opposite Page Is That Of Joe Hardin Brother Of John Wesley. Though we have seen many copies of The Life Of John Wesley Hardin and have been familiar with Ramon Adams and John H. Original brown cloth boards with gilt imprint have rubbed and bumped edges and corners and scratches across the boards. Spine ends worn off sunning and fraying on spine front board starting. Light soil creasing and toning on pages and and a few tears and chips on endpapers. The front endpapers have the signature of N. H. Mitchell dated 1882 with Mitchell's stamp on the front pastedown. Newton Horace Mitchell was a geologist who accompanied Custer's Black Hills expedition in 1874 and produced a multi-volume work on Minnesota's geology. At the rear is a pocket with four kinship charts. Good condition.<br /> <br /> The United States Congress established the Bureau of Ethnology in 1879. Directed by surveyor geologist and U.S. Army Major John Wesley Powell the Bureau collected European-American knowledge about Indigenous nations motivated by the false "vanishing race" theory that Indigenous cultures and ways of life were naturally fading out of existence - though in reality they were being displaced by the westward expansion of the United States government and European-American settlers. The Bureau of Ethnology gathered thousands of photographs illustrations and other documentation of Indigenous cultures until it merged with other divisions of the Smithsonian Institute in the 1960s. <br /> <br /> John Wesley Powell 1834-1902 was an American geologist U.S. Army soldier surveyor and explorer. He is most famous for his 1869 geographic expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers which resulted in thorough cartographic and scientific documentation of the rivers and surrounding canyon country including the Grand Canyon.
