Mitchell was a professor at Columbia and one of the first directors of the New School for Social Research His magnum opus Business Cycles appeared in 1913. The Preface begins: This book offers an analytic description of the complicated processes by which seasons of business prosperity crisis depression and revival come about in the modern world. The materials used consist chiefly of market reports and statistics concerning the business cycles which have run their course since 1890 in the United States England Germany and France. "Wesley" reassures his wife "Mary" "We get along firstrait I am first cook and Josh is dishwasher and milk maid and so you need not be uneasy about us starving as long as the meal and midlings last." He gives further evidence of his expertise in the kitchen at the expense of outdoor work noting "I can't bake the flower I can cook the rice and eggs tho" and closes with the sentiment "make your self easy about us until you can leave there altho I would like to be with you. Rogers a poem entitled Loguen's Position also by Rogers and two letters between J.W. and Sarah Logue the wife of his former master written in 1860: upon hearing of his book's publication Sarah demands financial compensation in exchange for "giving up all claim I have on you." His reply is quite a dignified one rebuking her for her outrageous demand and describing his new life "among a free people who I thank God sympathize with my rights and the rights of mankind." Loguen was an abolitionist and bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. He escaped slavery pursued higher education and opened several schools in central New York State. His Syracuse home was a stop on the Underground Railroad and the assistance he gave to other fugitive slaves is well-documented including a letter published in one of Frederick Douglass's papers.
