1895007828Detroit Michigan: Acme White Lead and Color Works 1895. Very Good. Rare unusual paint company promotional and customer aid tool with 22 color plates which one can scroll up or down with two side roller handles. Houses are generally rather grand shingle houses such as one finds still in old upscale and formerly upscale suburban communities or old-time seaside resorts such as line the New Jersey shore. The houses today are widely known by the over-general label of Victorian or just slightly more specificet also somewhat inaccurately as Queen Anne-style homes but regardless have sprawl a charming assymmetry large windows promising sun-drenched rooms and expansive porches or verandahs typically. N.d. circa 1890s. The oak box measures about 40 cm in height 46 cm wide and about 13 cm deep. The window which reveals the scroll's panels in the front is an oblong 29 by 37 cm and of course these are the dimensions of the individual panels. The Acme company was incorporated in 1884. The paints being promoted here became popular; they were appreciated for their fast drying properties. The company later became known as Acme Quality Paints. It was acquired or absorbed by Sherwin-Williams in the 1920s or 30s. This contraption is a rare survivor. The only institutional copy of which we are aware is at the Athenaeum in Philadelphia but this copy has only 15 of the 22 plates that we have here. We believe that the same plates may have been issued in book form and in that form may reside also at the University of Pennsylvania. Condition: some side chipping or tearing of the scroll. The scroll turning becomes somewhat sticky around plate 15 -- this we believe can be ameliorated. And any user should operate the turning with great prudence and care. This was prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy Science and Technology Under DOE Idaho Operations Office Contract DE-AC07-05ID14517. This report evaluates alternative processes that could be used to produce Pu-238 fueled General Purpose Heat Sources GHPS for radioisotope thermoelectric generators RTG. Fabricating GPHSs with the current process had remained essentially unchanged since its development in the 1970s. Thirty years of technological advancements have been made in the fields of chemistry manufacturing ceramics and control systems. At the Department of Energy's request alternate manufacturing methods were compared to current methods to determine if alternative fabrication processes could reduce the hazards especially the production of respirable fines while producing an equivalent GPHS product An expert committed performed the evaluation with input from four national laboratories experienced in Pu-238 handling. The objectives of the evaluation were: to minimize the potential for airborne radioactive contamination release during fabrication; to reduce personnel radiation exposure during fabrication; and to reduce cracking of the unclad pellets while satisfying impact tests and operating performance requirements. This evaluation reduced the list of process alternatives to a small number that warranted further testing. The evaluation Executive Summary presented a graphic that depicted a timeline for selecting a final Pu-238 GHPS fabrication process and qualifying the new process for space flight. A9780309267366Paperback / softback. New. Lead is a ubiquitous metal in the environment and its adverse effects on human health are well documented. Lead interacts at multiple cellular sites and can alter protein function in part through binding to amino acid sulfhydryl and carboxyl groups on a wide variety of structural and functional proteins. In addition lead mimics calcium and other divalent cations and it induces the increased production of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species. Adverse effects associated with lead exposure can be observed in multiple body systems including the nervous cardiovascular renal hematologic immunologic and reproductive systems. Lead exposure is also known to induce adverse developmental effects in utero and in the developing neonate. Lead poses an occupational health hazard and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA developed a lead standard for general industry that regulates many workplace exposures to this metal. The standard was promulgated in 1978 and encompasses several approaches for reducing exposure to lead including the establishment of a permissible exposure limit PEL of 50 g/m3 in air an 8-hour time-weighted average TWA exposure guidelines for instituting medical surveillance guidelines for removal from and return to work and other risk-management strategies. An action level of 30 g/m3 an 8-hour TWA for lead was established to trigger medical surveillance in employees exposed above that level for more than 30 days per year. Another provision is that any employee who has a blood lead level BLL of 60 g/dL or higher or three consecutive BLLs averaging 50 g/dL or higher must be removed from work involving lead exposure. An employee may resume work associated with lead exposure only after two BLLs are lower than 40 g/dL. Thus maintaining BLLs lower than 40 g/dL was judged by OSHA to protect workers from adverse health effects. The OSHA standard also includes a recommendation that BLLs of workers who are planning a pregnancy be under 30 g/dL. In light of knowledge about the hazards posed by occupational lead exposure the Department of Defense DOD asked the National Research Council to evaluate potential health risks from recurrent lead exposure of firing-range personnel. Specifically DOD asked the National Research Council to determine whether current exposure standards for lead on DOD firing ranges protect its workers adequately. The committee also considered measures of cumulative lead dose. Potential Health Risks to DOD Firing-Range Personnel from Recurrent Lead Exposure will help to inform decisions about setting new air exposure limits for lead on firing ranges about whether to implement limits for surface contamination and about how to design lead-surveillance programs for range personnel appropriately. paperback
