Octavo illustrated with 24 plain stipple-engraved plates pp xxxvi 751 ivi untrimmed age-toned and with foxing heavy on some pages and plates but almost or entirely lacking on the larger parts of the volumes one page more heavily browned from the insertion of a paper at some point with the blindstamp of the Carnegie Institution on the title pages and also the tiny stamp of the Haverford College Library; the 'sold' label of Haverford is loosely inserted. Recently bound in grey boards new endpapers the paper spine labels reading "The Plants of North America". SCARCE. "The first publication on plants from all of North America above Mexico and the first to publish plants from the Pacific Coast Pursh's Flora includes more than 3000 species and 470 genera including the first descriptions of more than 100 species collected by the Lewis and Clark expedition" ANB. Sabin 66728. Pursh a German botanist came to America in 1799 as a traveler collector gardener and landscape artist. From 1803 until about 1805 he was in charge of William Hamilton's estate near Philadelphia before becoming employed in the botanizing expeditions of Benjamin Smith Barton. From 1809 to 1810 he headed Hosack's Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. In 1811 Pursh traveled to England where he produced his Flora under the patronage of A. B. Lambert to whom the work is dedicated. Pursh relied upon the Lewis and Clark specimens entrusted to M'Mahon for many of his descriptions of the Pacific coast plants; he also consulted some forty-one other botanical collections for his research. Apperently William Hooker the artist of Salisbury's Paradisus Londinensis was responsible for a good portion of both the drawings and engravings. Printing of the Flora Americae Septentrionalis was completed in late 1813 as the Linnaean Society possesses a presentation copy dated 21 December 1813. . Six volumes small octavo pp 588; 600 15; 584 10 uncut a few pages unopened a little age-toning and marking one gathering 347-350 in Volume IV detached and gatherings towards the rear of the volume becoming a bit weak and loose Volume VI has extra bis pages 343 - 354; very well illustrated with 197 engraved or wood engraved plates of which 31 are folding and 50 coloured plates of which 2 are folding and 1 folding table; bound in the original pink boards a bit worn chipped and marked original printed paper labels on the spines the upper cover of Volume V detached otherwise firm and tight a neat signature on each front endpaper. Apparently lacking one plate in Volume 1 Relative Sizes of the Planets though there is no sign of this ever having been bound in. There are several extra plates to those listed and our copy would seem to agree with the set at auction at Christie's in 2006 which contained 246 of 248 plates. A work of considerable charm and interest and despite some faults as mentioned a remarkable set in original unsophisticated state. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. His first book was this 6-volume work which was based on his obviously very comprehensive series of popular short lectures on everything from natural species to meteorites. First Edition. Boards. Two fold-out black white & red maps and fold-out photograph of displayed ores at front of book. Booklets in three languages were published for the exposition. This book was apparently specially bound and contains the text in English 61 pgs French and German each 71 pgs. Full leather embossed and with raised bands all edges gilt marbled endpapers. These folding plates are quite large- often 20 x 30" or even larger and have occasional folds but seem free of tears. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with impressed design and gilt title. The author of this work James Pollard Espy nicknamed "The Storm King" for his classic book The Philosophy of Storms was the first Meteorologist of the US Government pioneering in the use of the telegraph to assemble weather observation data. Espy designed the first American weather map for a private scientific institute in 1838 before he moved to Washington. His first official meteorological report was published in 1843 but apparently included no maps. So the 100 "Charts" in this second report represent the first weather maps published by the US Government. . Government Printing Office hardcover

First and only edition illustrated with six engraved plates drawn by the author slim octavo pp xx 100 a little foxing marking and age-toning but overall very sound internally original boards a later but still early cloth spine unlettered the binding again slightly worn but sound. With the book label of the physician and botanist Thomas Bell Salter. Of the utmost rarity. At the age of 19 Lindley was taken under the wing of William Jackson Hooker who at that time was still living in Halesworth before his move the following year to Glasgow. Lindley was impressed with a book he found in Hooker's extensive botanical library - Richard's "Demonstrations botaniques ou Analyse du Fruit considere en general" of 1808. He translated the work into English working for three days non-stop. When published it included six plates from Lindley's original drawings. The title page claims it includes the author's latest corrections and Stearn points out that the preface rejects Linnaeus' system of classification in favour of the the natural orders of Jussieu. This is the first book and the first published illustrations of the "father of modern orchidology" - one of the most importand and dominant figures of Victorian botany. First Edition. Boards. Good. Volume I - plates 2593 - 2692 extremely clean and bright. Volume II - plates 2693 - 2796 the first ten plates and text have faint fold markings otherwise very clean and bright. Volume III - plates 2798 - 2866 lacking 2797 one plate with a paper crease probably a production fault. Volume IV - is where it gets complicated. The paper in this last volume is of poorer quality with a little age-toning occasional scattered light blemishes or foxing. RARE. A further volume was published in 1863 but is not present here but all volumes are exceedingly scarce. A vital addition to the first edition of English Botany but rarely to be found. In the advertisement to Volume I it explains that the death of Sowerby in 1822 and Smith in 1828 delayed any possibility of the publication of these new discoveries. However Sowerby's two sons were now embarking on this venture which they originally thought would be complete in two volumes. Swiss botanist and explorer Pierre Edmond Boissier was amongst the most prolific collectors of the 19th century. Travelling through much of Europe North Africa and the Middle East he produced a vast taxonomic output. The Flora Orientalis is a monumental work with Latin descriptions of 11681 species. Despite the relegation of several of his names through synonymy his publications represent pioneering work which has been used as the baseline reference for the national floras of all the regions he visited.
