A complete structurally sound Good or better set. Early ownership signature of a Benj. Webb Jr. on endpaper and extra-title of v.1.<br /> <br /> A quite presentable set of Godman's treatise on the mammals of North America including some ethnographic notes on Native Americans and a lengthy discussion of the fossil record with special attention given to the Giant Mastodon. Much of the third volume is devoted to a description of the American whale fishery. Godman 1794-1830 was trained as a physician and was for some time the director of the Philadelphia Anatomical Rooms a private medical college where he achieved considerable renown as an anatomist. American Natural History described as "the first systematic treatise on the subject" DAB was first published in Philadelphia from 1826-1828; two "Second Editions" appeared in 1831 this one under the Stoddart & Atherton imprint and another by Key & Mielkie. Sabin and Imprints Bruntjen & Bruntjen note only the latter but OCLC records suggest that the two editions are collected with equivalent frequency. Neither Sabin nor Imprints supply a plate count for the Second Edition but our copy conforms to that at the Smithsonian Institution the only OCLC member institution to provide a collation. The author later published another work titled "Antiquities of America Explained" 1831 arguing that a group of Tyrians and Jews crossed the Atlantic 3000 years ago creating a colony in Nova Scotia that eventually spread across the entire continent. Trowbridge's name signed in blue pencil on front cover but autograph unverfied; possibly simply an attribution of authorship by a former reader. John Trowbridge 1843-1923 long-time professor of Physics at Harvard was a pioneer in developing laboratory techniques for research in physics; in his 1925 memorial of Trowbridge Theodore Lyman wrote: "The earlier part of the long period during which Professor Trowbridge was a member of the teaching staff of Harvard was characterized by the development of laboratory methods in teaching.Keenly alive to the lack of adequate facilities for the advancement of his chosen field along these lines at Harvard Trowbridge projected a great physical laboratory and found the means to construct it. When the laboratory was begun models for such a building were altogether lacking in this country." Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Science v.60 no. 14 p.651 ff.<br /> <br /> The facility Trowbridge constructed would be named the Jefferson Physical Laboratory: it was the first building in the Western Hemisphere dedicated solely to the physical sciences and is still a Harvard landmark. This learned society was founded on March 14 of 1833 in Mons with the aim of promoting all intellectual activities in the Belgian province of Hainaut. The first volume of Mémoires et publications de la Société des sciences des arts et des lettres du Hainaut appeared in 1840 and was published regularly until 1913. Only a few volumes were published between 1919 and 1947 and regular publication resumed in 1958.Includes several foldable lithograph plates.
