No margin notes. Illustrated with numerous line drawings. Tables. Includes bibliographical references. Ink-stamped "With the compliments of the author" on the front cover. This copy is from the library of scientist and author Robert B. Sosman with his small ink stamp. A physical chemist Robert Browning Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907 at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I his contributions there were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research. Following his retirement from U.S. Steel in 1947 he became visiting professor of Ceramics at Rutgers University. Dr. Sosman was a past president of the American Ceramic Society. In his honor the Society established The Robert B. Sosman Award "the highest recognition of scientific accomplishment given by the Basic Science Division. in recognition of outstanding achievement in basic science of an area that results in a significant impact to the field of ceramics." Volume 1 has been rebound in modern sympathetic brown cloth and is approx. half an inch shorter in height. Volume 2 has splits to the spine and the backstrip is slightly loose. Volume 3 has had the spine strengthened with Sellotape. Volume 4 is generally rubbed. All 4 volumes have a single library stamp on the title pages but the text is generally clean. All volumes have library booking forms and other marks on front endpapers. The Atlas volume is the same size but is bound with a leather spine with raised bands and gilt lettering. The same library marks occur. There are 42 county maps including Isle of Man Jersey Guernsey many of which have been strengthened with paper backing. There are also the folding maps of London and England and Wales as called for. These have also been strengthened. All maps except the England and Wales map have a single purple library stamp on them in the image area.
