1693019562The Princes Arms in St. Paul's Churchyard: Sam Smith 1693. Second edition. With four engraved plates small octavo t.p. 201326 133-406 2-page publisher's catalogue browning and age-toning with occasional blotching a corner torn from the first blank a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages tight internally original calf rubbed and pocked neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine the original endpapers retained. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Second edition. Full Leather. Good. Sam Smith Hardcover

20190147112019. NEW. Illustrated quarto pp 216 paperback a very good new copy. PRINTING WAS LIMITED TO 100 COPIES. Guinea-Conakry has one of the highest plant diversities in Sub-Saharan West Africa and is part of the Upper Guinean Forest ecoregion Burgess et al 2004; WWF 2000 and the Guinean Forests of West Africa biodiversity hotspot CEPF 2015. This diversity is due in part to the highland ranges of the Fouta Djalon and Loma-Man and Nimba mountains. These high altitude forests and grasslands have resulted in endemic species and interesting distribution patterns. There are large areas of lowland forest in Guinée Forestière Forest Guinea and some areas in Guinée Maritime Coastal Guinea though most of these forests are highly fragmented and small less than 1 km2 the largest intact area is found around the Kounounkan massif in Forécariah Prefecture. Guinea is a major supplier of the worlds bauxite and has significant reserves of high grade iron ore it also has small reserves of diamonds gold and uranium. As a result large areas of open cast mining exist in the country and pressure on habitats and vegetation are increasing with the need to bring revenue into the country; this is in addition to unsustainable slash and burn agriculture and a growing population. Already 35 of Guinea's rarest plant species are possibly extinct and 25 of these species are or were globally unique to Guinea. First Edition. Paperback. New. Paperback
