199633571University of Wisconsin Press. 1996. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very light shelfwear.; The foremost religious festival of ancient Athens—the city dedicated to Athena goddess of war fertility arts and wisdom—was the Panathenaia. Challenging old assumptions and refuting new theories Worshipping Athena addresses the many problems of interpretation and understanding that have swirled for years around the Panathenaia. Among the issues discussed is the recent sensational controversy over the Parthenon frieze perhaps the best known but least understood work of Greek art. For centuries the frieze has been thought to represent the Panathenaia procession but recently the argument has been advanced that it depicts the sacrifice of the daughters of the Athenian king Erechtheus. Worshipping Athena offers compelling evidence that the frieze does indeed depict the festal procession and also demonstrates that scenes of contemporary ritual were not unique to the Parthenon. Editor Jenifer Neils and the contributors—eminent classicists archaeologists and art historians—explore the role of the Panathenaia in Athenian life and compare it with similar festivals held throughout the ancient Greek world. They discuss such topics as the Panathenaia’s mythical origins the phenomenon of the festival’s valuable prizes oil-filled amphoras rather than the customary laurel wreath and the architecture sculpture and painting related to the festival.; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 224 pages . 0299151107 . Minor edgewear to DJ.; Expanding the discussion of religious participation of women in ancient Rome Celia E. Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage fertility and childbirth there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered. Based on research in ancient literature inscriptions and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B. C. E. Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial military and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres Liber and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status in addition to gender were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere.; Studies in the History of Greece and Rome; 248 pages . 0807830186 . 196284021London: Routledge & Kegan Paul 1962. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. xi; 162pp. Light bumping and edgewear to extremities otherwise sharp and strong with a slight bow to the boards; internally clean; in a strong solid dustjacket with some unsightly spotting and staining and a little marginal fraying and wear. A very good copy.

Lethbridge's investigation into the history and traditions of modern witchcraft if such a thing exists benefits from an amount of contribution from actual contemporary witches which is certainly an improvement on the general 'research' of the 60's and 70's which was much more interested in the 'dancing naked in the moonlight' aspects of magic and less in the 'as above so below' theoreticals. This is what happens when rare bookdealers sell books to Jimmie Page.
Lethbridge makes a credible attempt at a historical outline and includes some folkloric sources that are generally overlooked in favor of the nearest pointy hat. Not terribly uncommon but sought after. Routledge & Kegan Paul unknown
