"Peintre des ciels méditerranéens et d’un Orient plus rêvé que réel, Félix Ziem (1821-1911) fut un artiste nomade, inclassable, excentrique. Étudiant en architecture aux Beaux-Arts de Dijon, il rompit rapidement avec ce milieu et débuta une longue carrière dans les années 1840. Il découvrit, ébloui, le monde méditerranéen. Il fut également un grand voyageur parcourant la Russie, Constantinople, Venise, l’Afrique… Grand ami des peintres de Barbizon, il admirait Lorrain et Turner, mais également les maîtres hollandais ainsi que les grands peintres italiens de la Renaissance. Admirable dessinateur, dont témoignent ses carnets, il maîtrisait avec une grande dextérité l’aquarelle, le dessin au crayon, la plume et le sépia, créant des univers oniriques aux sujets les plus variés. Fortuné, célèbre à son époque, il séduisit une large clientèle. Il fut progressivement oublié par les institutions et ce n’est qu’au cours des dernières années qu’il fut redécouvert."
