Born in New York on May 21, 1904, the son of a minister, 'Fats' played the organ and sang in the choir of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where his father preached until he was fifteen years old. Shortly after, the lure of the stage beckoned him to the interesting field of the Harlem cabaret, and he remained in that gay section of the city until 1924, occasionally doubling as a theatre organist and as a piano-roll artist for the Q-R-S Company." - page 1. This little book tells the story of Carl Rollins Hammonds. Having grown small breasts as a teenager Hammonds worked as "half-man/half-woman" as a carnival dancer under the name Hedy Jo Star. Estrogen began to change her appearance more radically and in 1955 "I changed my sex" first appeared. In 1962 she underwent full gender reassignment surgery and this paperback edition appeared the following year. De Estrella" a cowboy or man of such an aspect. the first shows him grasping a six-shooter at a holster on the left waist; the second the man is relaxing in a chair reading a paper feet up on a nearby table. Booksin a Calfornia native who settled in the San Jose area ~ 1881 where he died almost 70 years later. Named after this individual is Booksin Elementary a high achieving elementary school located in the heart of San Jose's Willow Glen suburb.
