La domanda sulle cose ultime ha il suo luogo d'origine nell'esperienza religiosa; essa però riveste un'importanza fondamentale anche per la filosofia, perché rappresenta un modo radicale di interrogarsi sul senso ultimo del mondo e dell'esperienza. La riflessione sull'escatologia è presente in modo eminente nella religione biblica, sia ebraica sia cristiana, con una forte connotazione storica. Un contributo significativo si trova anche in diverse religioni e filosofie del mondo classico, dove però l'interesse per la storia è molto meno rilevante. Il confronto con il tema escatologico attraversa tutta la filosofia occidentale successiva all'età antica. Nella patristica e nella scolastica è stato sviluppato da autori che s'ispiravano alla visione cristiana. Nell'epoca moderna e contemporanea questa linea è proseguita, mentre altre correnti hanno ripreso il tema in forma secolarizzata e altre ancora hanno adottato un orizzonte estraneo a quello religioso. Il volume illustra la riflessione escatologica nel mondo biblico e in quello classico e offre un'ampia storia delle indagini filosofiche sull'argomento, dalla tarda antichità al pensiero contemporaneo.
