However, the studies carried out show that the settlement in the area has a very old past. This area was very important militarily and religiously the Byzantine Istanbul, known as the 'Second Romeî'. Among the historical structures taken over in this period by our district that was on the passage way of the Byzantine Army were Yedikule Fort to which Sultan Mehmed II Conqueror made some editions and Baliklama Ayazma (Holy Spring) and Church. Balikli Spring first became the subject of an epic on the Byzantine enthronement Of Leon I and became known with its modern name owing to an epic that is rumored to have been created during the conquest of Istanbul (Constantinople). Also, we can wholeheartedly say that our Zeytinburnu District has a rare wealth in terms of Islamic mysticism. Dervish Lodges within the boundaries of our district such as Perisan Baba, Hadji Mahmud Aga, Seyyid Nizam and Merkez Effendi Dervish lodges, as well as Yenikapi Mevlevi House, mentioned as a music academy, have been occasion for the education of extremely important figures of our mystic history.".

This translation of the Maqalat is an important contribution to the study of Islamic mysticism which has blossomed in the West under the general rubric of Sufism. But the lack of sources has resulted in Turkish forms of Sufism being neglected. This publication takes a great step forward in resolving that difficulty. There is probably no Turkish writing in the field of Islamic mysticism that is more fundamental, more historically influential, and more needed to round out the information existing in the English language. Therefore, this work will fill a major gap in the field. Haji Bektash Veli was an Alevi Muslim mystic, saint, Sayyid, humanist, and philosopher, who lived from 1209 to 1271. He lived and taught from approximately 1209 to 1271 in Anatolia. He is revered among Alevis for an Islamic understanding that is esoteric (spiritual), rational, progressive and humanistic. Alevi and Bektashi Muslims believe the path of Haji Bektash is the path of ?Ali ibn Abu Talib, since Ali was the source of Bektash's teachings. His original name was "Sayyid Muhammad ibn Sayyid Ibrahim Ata", was one of the figures who flourished in the Sultanate of Rum and had an important influence on the Turkish nomads of Asia Minor. He is also referred to as the Sultan of Hearts and the Derwish of the Derwishes. Haji Bektash Veli was a descendant of the 7th Shi'a Imam Musa Kazim.

Due to Unesco's designation of 2007 as the 800th anniversary of Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî's (1207-1273) birth, Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Istanbul Research Institute prepared the exhibition The Dervishes of Sovereignty, The Sovereignty of Dervishes: The Mevlevî Order in Istanbul, in order to shed light upon the Sufi history of Istanbul and to commemorate once again the life of Rumi. A mystical institution of medieval Islam at the end of 13th century with respect to its social and cultural roots, the Mevlevî Order assumes its unique place in the world due to Istanbul's close interaction with the Renaissance in Europe and embarks upon a journey that leads from Konya to Istanbul, upon Sultan Mehmed II's conquest of the latter. As part of the historical continuum that lasts for centuries, the Mevlevî Order is transformed from an Eastern mentality to becoming the epitome of an intellectual and spiritual bridge between the East and the West. Following the inauguration of the Galata Mevlevî Lodge in 1491, although the Order finds the opportunity to expand into the Balkan and Mediterranean geography, the Mevlevî sheikh families of Istanbul lay the foundations of the Istanbul Mevlevî Order as of the mid-17th century.
