Handy edition of the redoubtable Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary with its marvellous definitions. Published in 1800 during the raging Napoleonic wars with France see also the somewhat later inscription to a French ship's captain below. Samuel Johnson 1709-1784 or more commonly "Dr. Johnson" or "the Great Cham" was a brilliant English writer devout Anglican and Tory who made his reputation as a poet essayist moralist literary critic biographer editor and most lastingly as a lexicographer. His Dictionary of the English Language is noteworthy for its extent comprehensiveness and use of pithy definitions. James Boswell of course memorialized the life and sayings of the great doctor. So uncommon it has NOT been identified by Courtney & Smith Johnson Bibliography with Supplement e.g. pp.57-59. The eighth edition of A Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1799; the ninth edition in 1805. The upper cap of the spine is missing and the volume is rubbed with wear evident along the hinges and corners but the sewing is strong and the pages are clean with minimal toning. Minor brown offset from the fine engraved frontispiece of Dr. Johnson onto the title page. Bookstamp of bookseller "E. Desbois Bordeaux"; marbled endpapers. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette an open book on a shell with decorations 7 full-page 3.3 x 1.6 cm! woodcuts depicting important scenes from the Bible 1 as frontispiece and 1 opening each of the 5 books and the appendix each book and the appendix with a headpiece built up from typographic ornaments followed by a drop-title in red and ending with a typographic ornament in red as a tailpiece. Set in roman type with incidental italic. 80 pp. First and only Dutch edition deluxe issue with the title page and 12 other pages printed in red and black of De Groots thumb Bible one of the curious miniature books printed in the Netherlands in the mid-18th century in a tiny roman type 37 mm/20 lines or 5.5 point as a curiosity and collectors item or to be used as a Bible in a dollhouse. The text is an abstract or summary of the contents of the Bible in five books and an appendix containing a prayer incipit: The illustrations and ornamental headpieces all in miniature and in the present deluxe issue also the printing in red and black make the book a show piece for the skill of 18th-century Dutch printing enhanced here by the contemporary gold-tooled miniature binding. Abkouda records De Groot offering this edition in five kinds of bindings and unbound at prices ranging from 4 to 30 stuivers so he probably commissioned bindings from several binders. The present copy is probably what he calls a Frans bandje 9 stuivers. Adlard an overview of sun and moon eclipses in that year the calendar a "regal table" overview of British monarchs since 1066 an overview of the Royal family of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their children lists of great officers of state of Great Britain and Ireland an overview of stamps bills and promissory notes and finally a list of "transfer days at the bank &c." including the South Sea House and India House.The London Almanack was published by the Company of Stationers from the end of the 17th century until the end of the 19th century. They are of special interest for their fine publisher's bindings but also for their striking views of London.With a manucript owner's inscription on the front blank endpaper recto of the engraved title page in pencil "A. S. Wossley" and pencil annotations between the printed lines of the calendar. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear the binding is slightly damaged at the head and foot of the spine not affecting the integrity of the binding. Spielmann 18 recording a minor variant printed by 'Darton & Harvey Gracechurch-Street London' with 15 plates: 'Very similar to the Newbery Bible 1780 but with some alterations. The preface for example starts with the words: "It is not a very pleasant reflection" instead of "It is a melancholy reflection". This archive serves as an excellent surviving visual aid from the “Miniature Museum†exhibits created by the Commercial Museum of Philadelphia before and after World War I in order to promote foreign trade and develop international commerce for U.S. products. Sponsored by manufacturers suppliers and many different companies who would supply products to the Commercial Museum these interactive exhibits were intended to illustrate not only useful products of other countries and the advantage for trade in the U.S. but also to underlie important facts of modern industry. Dispatched for free these sample exhibits contained a cupboard at the base in which an educator or lecturer could place photographs and additional exhibits which would revolve on loan for assorted subjects to be taught. The photographs preserved here include those used originally with such trays as the “Beverages; Brush Fiber; Carbon; Coconut; Cotton; Cow; Flax; Gums & Resins; Iron; Ores & Metals; Rice; Rope Fiber; Rubber; Silk; Spice; Sugar & Wheat.†For instance this unknown instructor ordered for the “Beverages Drawer Exhibit†the photographs “Picking Tea†in Japan “Tea Factory†in Ceylon “Tea Ships†in Formosa Taiwan or “Picking Coffee†in Brazil which would have then been used with a series of large folding or rolling maps to be displayed as part of a multi-media presentation. As the cases were heavy and fragile these were sent out in place and further education materials would be dispatched to enhance their use but unfortunately classroom usage resulted in frequent lost and damaged photographs. Also present here are photos for “Camels Carrying Charcoal†into Constantinople Turkey; “Cutting Bananas†in Jamaica; “Cocoanut Plantation†& “Making Cocoanut Oil†in Ceylon; or the “Iron Furnace†in Hankow China or “Rope Factory†in Hong Kong. Two of the photos for Mexico include one still retaining the original caption for Charles Betts Waite of a smelter operation in Aguascalientes Mexico and another of the Sirena Mine in Guanajuato Mexico with the photographer’s imprint scratched out in negative but appears to have been a Winfield Scott image. Other images show the bustling harvesting of spices in Ceylon Singapore Jamaica and German East Africa rubber plantations in the Amazon Valley of Brazil and panning gold in Vancouver B.C. and hydraulic gold mining in Otago New Zealand with image by Burton Bros. of Dunedin. The Rice and Silk sections both offer excellent views of both processes in late Meiji and Taisho-era Japan. The Commercial Museum which originally opened in 1897 was the foremost source of international trade knowledge for American manufacturers in the early 20th Century. Slowly other Trade Commissions and Exhibitions supplanted the Commercial Museum and by the 1950’s the Miniature Museum visual aid exhibits had become obsolete and many had been broken up or photographs and samples dispersed through use. Although the Museum continued to provide programming and display exhibits until 1994 it was then closed indefinitely. See: Charles R. The elegant scene is not very lacivious--everybody is fully dressed although the surprised lady who turns away from the evidently unwelcome visitor shows a fair amount of leg and the gentleman is holding his tricorn hat in what might be regarded as a somewhat compromising position. The artist an Englishman born at the end of the 19th century studied with the eminent Walter Sickert and went on to exhibit landscapes and portraits at various prestigious venues in England and France. unknown

The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. In a later glassine wrapper. Housed in a very sturdy custom-made buckram folding box with inlaid marbled spine label. Color floral and foliate headpieces tailpieces and title page and 16 DELIGHTFUL MOUNTED COLOR PLATES BY JOHN HASSALL. Front endpaper with the ownership inscription "W. P. Rockwell November 1905." Trivial smudges to the suede but A NEARLY PRISTINE COPY of this delightful little book an item that is simply never found this well preserved.<br/> <br/> This is a diminutive golf manual with immense charm and offered in the most immaculate condition possible. In a small-pocket format the book provides the golfer with the game's rules etiquette technical terms names of golf clubs and their various uses a list of American champions since the organization of the United States Golf Association and a roster of the "leading players in the United States." Accompanying the text are a group of quite charming colored plates done by John Hassall 1868-1948 an active and celebrated watercolorist poster designer and illustrator from 1895 onwards. Houfe calls him "an original and versatile designer." As can be seen in the present volume Hassall seems to have been influenced by "the flat colors and two-dimensional decorative quality of Japanese prints which he adapts to his own work with thick outline and careful patterning." Whatever the influence one can't help but smile when looking at his work. Hassall depicts golf costume through the ages here including golfers in kilts trousers cloaks knickers and other attire; he also shows us a pair of disarmingly shabby young caddies two women and a boy incongruously dressed in Napoleonic greatcoat and tricorn hat. The most memorable thing about this item is its condition: as a book intended to be put in one's pocket and as a volume that was never sturdy to begin with there is absolutely no explanation for how our copy has survived to the present day in its remarkable state of preservation. When this copy without its box was sold in 2004 at PBA Galleries the most prominent auction purveyor of golf books and equipment the catalogue called it "the finest copy we have ever offered of this exceedingly scarce and fragile book.". In a custom-made folding buckram box with book wells for the three books and gilt-stamped marbled paper label inset on spine of the box. Consisting of three bound sets of 50 sequential photographs that when flipped either from back to front or front to back generate a stop motion animation of Bobby Jones demonstrating the proper form for executing a shot with various golf clubs see below. One volume with portions of spine gone at either end with partial loss of imprint wrappers inevitably somewhat soiled corners a bit rounded as expected but still remarkably well preserved especially considering its inevitable hard use being entirely sound and with the photographs in excellent condition.<br/> <br/> This is a scarce grouping of some of the most charming sports as well as miniature books we've ever offered for sale. In the 1930s the famous London department store Harrods published a series of so-called sports "flicker" books of which these three are perhaps the most famous other sports books involved cricket tennis lacrosse soccer badminton swimming and greyhound racing. Our three "flicker" books when the pages are riffled with one's thumb or fingers show the famous smooth-swinging American golfer Bobby Jones executing shots with various clubs. The first book #11a in the Harrods series features the driver and the mashie. The modern equivalent for this latter piece of equipment is slightly elusive but the "mashie" is an iron club with considerable loft meant to hit a golf ball a relatively short distance with a high trajectory Jones' "driver" has the same meaning today as it did 90 years ago. The second book features shots with a "brassie" roughly equivalent to today's 3- or 4-wood and an "iron" also called a "driving iron" which is like today's 1- or 2-iron. The third book shows Jones putting and escaping from heavy rough with a high-lofted club like today's sand wedge. It is great fun--not to mention still instructive--to riffle through these photographs watching one of the world's most celebrated golf swings come to life complete with Jones' knickers white shirt and flapping tie. It is also a fact of some interest that this English series would feature an American player at a time when British dominance in golf was beginning to erode. Given the physical use to which these items have been subjected it is difficult to believe that they are still intact let alone that they are solid enough to be handled without worry. Single folio illuminated miniature on paper in gouache and opaque colours heightened in gilt depicting a battle scene with men on horseback likely a scene from the Qur'an total leaf miniature painting 70 x 140 mm; image framed within polychrome border formed of multiple cartouches of floral designs mounted to card and set within marbled paper frame some light finger soiling and a little cockled and closed tears/creases repaired. 180 x 255mm 7 x 10 inches.<br /> An attractive album leaf that demonstrates the Indo-Persian artistic style of the 19th century in India. The colour palette and style of border illumination are typical of North Indian manuscript production however the painting itself is almost certainly by a Persian artist.<br /> Probably North India, Kashmir, second half of the nineteenth century. unknown
