181092Netherlands: second half of the 15th century. Radiant devotion A vibrant Pentecost scene from a Netherlandish Book of Hours. At the center the Virgin Mary is seated in a deep blue mantle while the Apostles gather around her as the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove from above. An owl is nestled in the lower margin of the border. Ornate borders with scrolling foliage naturalistic flora and fauna and architectural interiors are typical of Southern Netherlandish and Flemish illumination from the late 15th and early 16th century. The style and composition is reminiscent of works by artists of the Utrecht school see for example Walters Ms. W.182 or active in Bruges see Walters Ms. W.183 and 184. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. Illuminated miniature and border on vellum 133 x 105 mm panted in gold and colours. Presented in a gilt frame with UV protective glass. A little rubbing in outer margins of miniature otherwise well preserved and with gilt bright; small bump to edge of frame on the back. A very good example. hardcover

Cook. 12mo tooled and gilt-stamped leather with four hubs engraved frontispiece of Dr. Johnson by Cook frontis. & t.p. iii-iv advert. 284 pages. Very Rare! Edited by Rev. Joseph Hamilton. Handy edition of the redoubtable Dr. Johnson's famous dictionary with its marvellous definitions. Published in 1800 during the raging Napoleonic wars with France see also the somewhat later inscription to a French ship's captain below. Samuel Johnson 1709-1784 or more commonly "Dr. Johnson" or "the Great Cham" was a brilliant English writer devout Anglican and Tory who made his reputation as a poet essayist moralist literary critic biographer editor and most lastingly as a lexicographer. His Dictionary of the English Language is noteworthy for its extent comprehensiveness and use of pithy definitions. James Boswell of course memorialized the life and sayings of the great doctor. So uncommon it has NOT been identified by Courtney & Smith Johnson Bibliography with Supplement e.g. pp.57-59. The eighth edition of A Dictionary of the English Language appeared in 1799; the ninth edition in 1805. The upper cap of the spine is missing and the volume is rubbed with wear evident along the hinges and corners but the sewing is strong and the pages are clean with minimal toning. Minor brown offset from the fine engraved frontispiece of Dr. Johnson onto the title page. Bookstamp of bookseller "E. Desbois Bordeaux"; marbled endpapers. Interesting ink presentation on ffe: "To / J or "T" Beck Esqr. / commanding the French / packett Esteva on / her passage from Bordeaux / to Vera Cruz in Nov. 1831 ~ by his most obedt / humble servant / L. 22106'Friday Evg'. No place or date. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium on light-green paper. In good condition lightly aged. The letter begins: 'My Dear Miss de Witte Of course I found the Yankee Poems directly after You were Gone – too carefully put by. Do not put mine away too carefully – as I want You to really read them. Poetry of France The sad lines of Marguerite d'Ecosse in the notes at the end are original & perhaps will stroke You – as the mournful Subject did me. The lines have been translated into German French &c.' The news of the family the de Witte named has made her 'heart ache' and as Costello is sure she and her 'kind Mamma do something to help them' she asks her to 'let them have the enclosed trifle. It is nothing but being unexpected and sure to be useful in some way may be acceptable'. She asks her to 'say nothing about it to any one – as it is of no Consequence and I coul dnot offer it except with other Contributions'. She will 'look for the Scandinavian poetry & may find it. Longfellow gives some in his Poets of Europe'. She ends in hopes of hearing 'better news of colds &c'. 'Friday Evg'. No place or date. unknown
