A delicate brilliantly executed example of late 19th century miniature book design this title presents biblical quotations in a devotional format- with one phrase for each morning and evening of a month. Lovely chromolithographs are interspersed throughout the text. This title is exceptionally rare with OCLC listing no libraries possessing a copy of it. Indeed OCLC lists the only known copy as being in the collection of famed miniature book collector Ruth E. Adomeit. Front cover a bit rubbed and darkened with gilt decoration somewhat dulled. Like condition affecting gilded edges. Previous owner's pencil gift inscription to verso of front free endsheet. Sporadic light foxing throughout. Boards ruled in gilt spine stamped in gilt. First five leaves lacking outer corner somewhat affecting text. Good. With a biblical verse for everyday of the year including February 29th. "The smallest series of Bible selections for every day of the year is entitled Small Rain Upon the Tener Herb. This title like Dew Drops is taken from Deuteronomy 32:2 and is itself an extract from the full text which is: 'My doctrine shall drop as the rain My speech shall distil as the dew; As the small rain upon the tender grass And as the showers upon the herb.' Small Rain was first published about 1830 by our friends the Religious Tract Society in London. It is one of the commonest miniature books of the period and went through some twenty editions between 1830 and 1840. Most copies measure 1 1/4 by 1 inches consist of 128 pages with easily readable six-point type. Smaller than Dew Drops and Daily Food ths devotional morsel was mainly for children." One of 400 copies printed in black red and blue on English mould-made paper. An historical essay concerning miniatures by the former librarian at Brown University and president of the American Library Association. The type was originally set for Bruce Rogers by Mackenzie and Harris but the proofs arrived the day Rogers died 21 May 1957.
