Original embossed brown cloth covers. 203 pages. 18 engravings including frontispiece depicting "Adam and Eve in the Garden" "The Prodigal Son" "Samson Killing A Lion" "Christ's Agony in the Garden" "Moses in the Bullrushes" "John the Baptist" and more. Miniature 'thumb bibles' such as this one were abridged versions of the Bible intended for children and decorated with pictures. <br /> <br /> At the time that this description is being written just four copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Pencil ownership inscription on front pastedown reading "Sallie Hitch's Book Presented By Her Father". Sallie practices her name on the rear endpaper and leaves a small pencil doodle. Textblock tight though front hinge has separated from the textblock. Covers whole. Faint titles to spine. Pages occasionally creased and slightly toned but overall clean and attractive. An interesting beautifully illustrated volume in good condition. unknown

17570Both on her letterhead 'WALTERS ANSON R.M.S.' 48 Parkstone Avenue Parkstone Dorset. 6 and 11 February 1950. Both letters 2pp. 12mo. Both in good condition lightly-aged the second with the first page lightly crossed through in pencil. The letters relate to work done for the firm of her brother-in-law Marcus Adams described in his Times obituary as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family for more than 30 years' at 43 Dover Street Mayfair. She begins the first letter by explaining that she has 'endeavoured to make the Woodall miniature like the snapshot but unless they are really satisfied I had better do another. It is very difficult when something different from the photo is wanted but I don't mind how long it takes if only I can get what they want as they have lost the boy If I have to do another please return this with another piece of ivory I have no more so that I shall be sure of getting colour of hair right.' She continues with more business talk before concluding with a discussion of politics attacking the Labour government as an 'extravagant incompetent horde'. In the second letter she discusses 'the Hillmans group' and her willingness to do 'a specimen of Tuckwell' 'such a bright very much alive & happy child'. The letter concludes with a discussion of colour in her work and the importance of pleasing the mother of the subject. Binding of "A Testament of Freedom" somewhat worn including a short crack to upper joint; "A Christmas Parable with a little rubbing to extremities and tail of lower joint; all other works in mint condition inside and out.<br/> <br/> Printer and press founder Norman Forgue said in his bibliography that the Black Cat Press "has had a long and prolific life. Founded in 1932 at the height of the Depression its only assets were an empty pocketbook and a burning desire to do fine printing and make beautiful books and hopefully find employment." Although Forgue had printed several "little" books and keepsakes early in his career the first true miniature book was not produced by the press until 1961. Miniature Bible 16mo 3.5" x 2" tan calf with embossed backstrip & four hubs newer endpapers all edges gilded complete in ~ 422 6 blank pages. Charming yet sturdy very small Bible dating from the War of 1812. The binding is attractively embossed leather with of course some rubbing. Small binder's ink stamp stating "Armstrong" on rear endpaper. The pages are of strong rag paper which is slightly age-toned occasionally bearing slight discolorations and often slightly dog-eared though that has been reversed in most cases. The type is clear and readable. Overall a wonderful and attractive example of a tiny early American edition of the Bible that used British sheets. George Eyre and Andrew Strahan unknown
