Each volume in the original green printed paper wrappers. Held in the original pink and green cardboard case with glass lid. All in very good condition.</p><p>Complete set of the first edition of a charming miniature library for children consisting of ten illustrated volumes preserved in their original box. Each volume has a specific subject such as: Geography the Bible birds stories from the Middle East mythology botany etc. A French edition exists as well but there the volume on Dutch history is replaced with French history. The present set is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries.</p><p>The work was reviewed in 'Vaderlandsche letteroefeningen 1824' page 45: "Een allergelukkigste inval waarvoor menig lezer in miniatuur den vinder danken zal. Ofschoon Kermis St. Nicolaas en Nieuwjaar achter den rug zijn het blijft te allen tijde een fraai geschenk voor de lieve Jeugd. Complete set of the first edition of a charming miniature library preserved in the original box. This educational set for children contains works on geography Dutch history classical mythology natural history and the Bible with all the plates and maps included. A French edition was published in the same year but replaced the volume on Dutch history with a work on French history. Due to the charm of this miniature library a facsimile edition was published in 1984. The present set however is the first edition which is rare on the market and only available in a few libraries.Many miniature books were primarily written for children. As was usually the case with children's books published before the 20th century miniature books were typically instructional or educational in nature. Although they have existed since at least the early 17th century they were only specifically marketed towards children from the mid-18th century onwards. Children's books from the end of the 18th century were often influenced by the theories of Jean Jacques Rousseau 1712-1778 who thought that children should learn through play and at their own pace. According to Welsh the present works show Rousseau's ideas because they present the information through short stories.The edges and corners of the box are somewhat scuffed and the gold trimming on the lid has come loose in some spots with some loss of material. The paper wrappers of some of the volumes show some signs of wear. A few pages loose in ads 5 8 and 9 but they are still included. Bibliothèque miniature dans un petit meuble en bois brun laqué (vernis). Le devant est sculpté et présente une petite porte-fenêtre (sans clef). Mesures: 32x 20 ainsi que 11 cm de profondeur. Au dos du meuble se trouve une étiquette avec le nom de l’artisan-fabricant "Alphonse Giroux". La bibliothèque est remplie de 9 volumes pour la jeunesse, tous en parfait état en reliures carton couvert de papier gauffré & doré, dont 8 font partie de la Bibliotheque spéciale de la Jeunesse, Paris, Lehuby (vers 1850, avec gravures). Le neuvième et dernier volume, intitulé Gymnase moral d'Education. a été édité par Pornin à Tours en 1846.

Les livres comportent en tout 2 frontispices gravés ainsi que 7 planches gravées. Légères brunissures. Charmant petit meuble avec 9 ouvrages richement ornés, en parfait état.
