1957List1012Nyack: Fellowship of Reconciliation 1957. First Edition. Small 4to 10 ¼ x 6 ¾ and each 16 pp. A fine copy unread with slightest normal tanning but exceptionally preserved overall. Fine. Barry Sy. A year after moving its headquarters from New York City to Nyack New York the Fellowship of Reconciliation - an interfaith group founded in 1915 with pacifist roots - published this an illustrated story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which helped introduce the country to Martin Luther King Jr. The comic was produced by a number of artists under the direction of Al Capp who is best known for L'il Abner. The FoR had a year earlier assigned the white Methodist minister Glenn E. Smiley to assist the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Montgomery bus boycott. Smiley as well as executive secretary and director of publications Alfred Hassler - a prolific anti-war writer - directed the production of this comic book with the help of Capp's studio who assigned the artist Sy Barry to illustrate the work. Dr. King contributed to and endorsed the work himself offering several editorial suggestions. Besides telling the story of King and the boycott the comic introduced the principles of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. John Lewis cited the work as an inspiration for his three-part graphic novel series March.

Through grant funding the FoR was able to produce an initial run of 250000 copies which were distributed through a network of civil rights groups churches and schools. Offered here is a pristine original copy of the first edition distinguishable from later reprints by the presence of a "For Additional Copies Contact:" stamp on the rear cover listing the address of the Philadelphia area FoR office. FoR staff in particular Jim Lawson and Glenn Smiley distributed the comic throughout the south to younger audience members while giving workshops on nonviolence. The FoR produced a second version drawn by a different artist for Latin American audiences.

Despite the comic's importance very few original copies have survived we locate no others for sale at the time of this writing. The comic historian and artist Tom Christopher posted an article about it on his website in 2004 which led to a revival in interest and eventually additional reprints and translations.

Overall a pristine copy of a very important comic book which helped introduce and define the Civil Rights Movement and its messages of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. 19477621Winnipeg Manitoba: Gauvin Gentzel Studio 1947. First Edition. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph panoramic format measuring 13" x 7.25" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 14" x 17". Bears the imprint of the prominent Winnipeg firm "Gauvin Gentzel Studio" to the upper left. A printed caption below the image identifies the "Manitoba Legislative Assembly 1947" and lists all members by row along with the Speaker and legislative staff.

A crisp and detailed panoramic photograph capturing the 22nd Manitoba Legislature in session. The image provides a rare wide-angle view of the historic chamber with all members present at their desks. This 1947 assembly is a fascinating snapshot of Manitoba's unique "Coalition" era. The government led by Premier Stuart S. Garson K.C. pictured in the 3rd row was a fusion of Liberal-Progressives and Progressive Conservatives a "non-partisan" administration that had its origins in the war years.

The photograph is a roster of Manitoba's post-war political establishment. In addition to Premier Garson who would leave in 1948 to join the federal cabinet the roster includes his successor Hon. Douglas L. Campbell 3rd Row who would go on to be Premier for a decade. Also present are numerous other cabinet ministers and future luminaries including: Hon. J. S. McDiarmid 3rd Row who would be appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in 1953; Lt.-Col. Gordon Churchill 1st Row a future federal MP and prominent cabinet minister in the Diefenbaker government; Gunnar S. Thorvaldson K.C. 2nd Row a future Senator.

Most remarkably this image captures the legislature's sole dissenter and one of its most notable figures: William "Bill" A. Kardash 2nd Row. As the only member of the Labor-Progressive Party Communist in the assembly Kardash was a conspicuous and often isolated voice in the coalition-dominated house. His presence seated amongst the very establishment he ideologically opposed is a powerful visual representation of the era's complex political landscape at the dawn of the Cold War.

The photograph itself is a fine example of the large-format group portraiture perfected by the Gauvin Gentzel Studio one of Winnipeg's leading photographic firms for decades known for their clarity and high-quality compositions. The silver gelatin print retains excellent clarity sharp detail and strong contrast. The mat is clean and bright with only very light toning to the edges and minor bumping to the corners. A near-fine example.

Gauvin Gentzel Studio unknown
198714551Los Angeles CA: Kensington Road Studio 1987. First Edition. First Printing. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket As Issued. Los Angeles CA: Kensington Road Studio 1987. Softcover. As New/None As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 3 pages. Rare David Burrill and Kensington Road Studio collectible set. Three 3 original vintage color photographic prints of David Burrill one of the most good-looking male-nude models of our time as photographed by Kensington Road Studio of Los Angeles. The prints are considerably larger at 5 X 7 inches are "bleed" and are reproduced on archival FujiColor Photographic Papers. Each is encased in a protective plastic sheet. Each photograph shows David Burrill posing full-frontal nude shot with saturated lighting. Kensington Road Studio's grittiness explicitness and brazen-ness have strongly influenced the work of such photographers as Terry Richardson especially its unpretentious "come-and-get-it" "what-are-you-waiting-for" look. As Richardson has noted there is a tenderness sweetness and even an innocence about these photographs that the more artistically-inclined photographers of both the male and female nudes looked down upon and that our Terry almost singlehandedly pun not intended revived and made mainstream in his magazine fashion/lifestyle and gallery work. This is the genuine article an absolute "must-have" collectible not just memorabilia item for David Burrill and male erotic art photography collectors. These original vintage color photographic prints are now collectible. As far as we know this is the only set available online is eminently suitable for framing and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. A rare set thus. One of the iconic American male-nude models of the 20th century. A fine set. . Kensington Road Studio paperback
