Virginia Zeani, nata in Romania nel 1925, è uno dei soprani più importanti del secondo dopoguerra, protagonista in Italia - la sua seconda patria, in cui abitò per oltre trent'anni - di spettacoli storici, dalla prima mondiale de I dialoghi delle Carmelitane di Poulenc a tantissime recite di Traviata (Violetta fu il suo ruolo simbolo) e di ripescaggi di opere rare. Sposata con Nicola Rossi-Lemeni, fu legata alla migliore società romana e italiana, a partire dalla coppia Fellini-Masina con cui condivideva la residenza estiva a Fregene; dall'inizio degli anni '80 risiede negli Stati Uniti, dove ha abbandonato la carriera sul palcoscenico per quella, non meno coronata da successi, di insegnante di canto. Questo libro non è solo una raccolta di memorie, private e pubbliche, dall'infanzia a Solovastru e Bucarest agli anni italiani e poi americani, ma anche un imperdibile spaccato di un mondo, di una società, di un clima culturale.
