Advert of Rigoletto Place des Arts - Montreal S. A. Goumsky - London. Korat also known as Korad was a Turkish female opera artist. She made her stage debut as 'Lucia' at Ankara State Opera. He studied on the Italian operas at the Deutsche Oper in Hannover and at the La Scala in Milan. In 1959 she was a soloist in the interpretation of the 9th Symphony in the Beethoven Festival Germany. She played the leading roles in the opera stages of European US and African countries. In 1966 she participated in the Verdi Festival in Montreal with famous artists. The Opera director and producer tells Jean Dalrymple that he'd "be delighted to hear Jay Willoughby. However I'm off to San Francisco very shortly for Carmen". He asks if Willoughby could contact him when he's back. He goes on to invite Jean to the "second set of performances May 19-22 - featuring the first performance of Dominick Argento's monologue A Water Bird Talk and an incredible chamber opera written in Theresienstadt concentration camp - The Emperor of Atlantis." Signed in full "Ian Strasfogel". Folded for mailing the edges are very faintly darkened. Near fine. <p>The one-act opera "The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death" Der Kaiser von Atlantis oder Die Tod-Verweigerung was composed by Viktor Ullmann and Peter Kien while interned at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. It was not allowed to be performed and the script was not finished until the 1970s. The poet Aaron Kramer prepared an English translation which the San Francisco Spring Opera Theater first performed in April 1977 and which had its New York premiere at the New Opera Theatre of the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 19 1977. The world premiere of Dominic Argento's "A Water Bird Talk" also took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that same evening.<p>The opera director and producer Ian Strasfogel born 1940 was the author of several plays screenplays and librettos and of a novel titled "Operaland". Strasfogel directed over 100 productions throughout Europe and North America and frequently collaborated with Gyorgy Ligeti Luciano Berio Bruno Maderna Hans Werner Henze and Otto Piene.<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. 10235The letters all on letterheads of the British Broadcasting Corporation BBC mainly from Broadcasting House London dating from between 1944 and 1952. For more information about Stephen Manton Bradbury or Stephen Manton as he was known professionally see his obituary in The Times 8 September 1970. The collection is in good condition on aged paper. The correspondence from various figures in various BBC music departments both London and regional and in a variety of formats from 4to down to 12mo breaks down to the following number of items per year: 1944 8; 1945 5; 1946 30; 1947 34; 1948 32; 1949 22; 1950 11; 1951 15; 1952 1. A businesslike correspondence with only very occasional personal asides casting an interesting light on the relations between the BBC and individual artists during the Second World War and its aftermath. Topics include contracts fees dates and times of engagements apologies for erroneous billing responses to complaints and suggestions advertising in the Radio Times. On 2 January 1950 Charles Groves writes to assure Manton that 'in speaking of your lack of heroics I was only thinking of the music which you submitted to me and I can assure you that there is no bar on you that might prevent you from singing the music for which you are suited with the Northern Orchestra'. Also present are more than thirty typewritten cast lists for performances featuring Manton separated from the relevant item of correspondence and a few drafts of Manton's letters and a small amount of correspondence from other sources including two letters apiece from his agents Wardour Agency Ltd and from the London music publishers Chappell & Co. Printed in brown on cream paper with a 5-1/4 inch high by 4 inch wide portrait of the singer printed at top left above a brief biography with the banner title to the right of the image. Reviews of Ina Souez' performances are printed in 3 columns with several reviews quoted under each of several headings including "Glyndebourne Opera Festival 1936" "Glyndebourne 1935" "Copenhagen 1936" "International Season Royal Opera House Covent Garden" etc. A 5-1/2 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide full-length portrait appears at bottom right. The poster is folded vertically and horizontally with a short tear to the top of the vertical fold. It is otherwise slightly soiled with minor creases. The word "DUPL>NYPL" is stamped several times on the verso. Very good. <p>As per the brief biography printed under her portrait "Ina Souez the new star soprano was born in Windsor Colorado America. In 1928 on the advice of Gatti Casazza she went to Italy to study voice production with Signor Rodolfo Mele. She has appeared for several seasons at Covent Garden in principal roles and at the Glyndebourne Mozart Festival where she is permanently engaged. She has also appeared in Denmark Germany and Paris and has been declared by the leading critics of Europe as the greatest Mozart soprano living. Her Bellini and Verdi have been declared unsurpassable. In Puccini she also excels and in Ravel and Bizet is considered unequaled."<p>Ina Souez 1903-1992 was born Ina Rains to a family of Cherokee heritage in Windsor Colorado. Upon embarking on her career she took her grandmother's last name "Souez". Ina Souez 1903-1992 first studied with the Canadian contralto Florence Hinman and made her debut as Mimi in Ivrea in 1928. At Florence Hinman's urging she went to Italy in 1931 to study with Sofia del Campo. She starred in roles in Milan and these were soon followed by appearances in London Paris and Rome. She first sang at Glyndebourne on the second night of the Festival's inauguration in 1934 and went on to become the festival's prima donna. She made her home in London and was the first to commercially record performances of "Don Giovanni" ad "Cosi fan Tutte". Returning to the US at the outbreak of WWII she enlisted in the Women's Army Corps and subsequently signed up with the Spike Jones band often playing the comedian as members of the band would remove pigeons from her hat while she sang.
