The Opera director and producer tells Jean Dalrymple that he'd "be delighted to hear Jay Willoughby. However I'm off to San Francisco very shortly for Carmen". He asks if Willoughby could contact him when he's back. He goes on to invite Jean to the "second set of performances May 19-22 - featuring the first performance of Dominick Argento's monologue A Water Bird Talk and an incredible chamber opera written in Theresienstadt concentration camp - The Emperor of Atlantis." Signed in full "Ian Strasfogel". Folded for mailing the edges are very faintly darkened. Near fine. <p>The one-act opera "The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death" Der Kaiser von Atlantis oder Die Tod-Verweigerung was composed by Viktor Ullmann and Peter Kien while interned at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. It was not allowed to be performed and the script was not finished until the 1970s. The poet Aaron Kramer prepared an English translation which the San Francisco Spring Opera Theater first performed in April 1977 and which had its New York premiere at the New Opera Theatre of the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 19 1977. The world premiere of Dominic Argento's "A Water Bird Talk" also took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that same evening.<p>The opera director and producer Ian Strasfogel born 1940 was the author of several plays screenplays and librettos and of a novel titled "Operaland". Strasfogel directed over 100 productions throughout Europe and North America and frequently collaborated with Gyorgy Ligeti Luciano Berio Bruno Maderna Hans Werner Henze and Otto Piene.<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. Two black and white 8x10 photographs with some fading very good. <br /> <br /> The Andrieff Trio was a popular terpsichorean act in the 1920s Vaudeville scene made up of married couple Yasha and Marie Andrieff and Yasha's brother Andrew Andrieff. All three dancers were Russian and trained in both classical and popular dance styles. Their headlining act was what they called the "double face dance" where Marie danced with both men simultaneously and through clever costuming and choreography seemed to be perpetually facing the audience as her partners spun her around the stage.<br /> <br /> The group was scheduled to perform at the Bushwick Theater part of B.F. Keith's network of Vaudeville performance venues the week of September 3 1923. The picture of just Yasha and Marie is dated September 10 and inscribed to "our dear friend Mr. and Mrs. Klawans" likely referring to Bernard "Barney" Klawans the Broadway producer. unknown
1886100911<p>November 21 1886. 1886. Good. - Franco Novara's autograph boldly penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch card stock clipped from an album and mounted onto slightly larger card stock. Signed and dated "Franco Novara / 21. Nov. 1886. / New York". Mounted on the verso of the mount is the pianist Madeline Schiller's autograph penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock signed "Very Sincerely / Madeline Schiller". There is offsetting to the card signed by Novara and remnants of paper adhere to the right edge of the card bearing Schiller's signature with some offsetting along the left edge of that card. Good.</p><p>The English bass Francis Naish sang under the stage name Francis Novara 1859-1899. He was known for his performance as the devilish Mephistopheles in Gounod's "Faust" which opened on October 22 1883 as the first opera in the Metropolitan Opera's first season.</p><p>The English-born pianist Madeline Schiller 1843-1911 went to Leipzig to study with Ignaz Moscheles making her debut there with Mendolssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 on January 23 1862. She returned to London to perform there as well as Australia. She married Marcus Elmer Bennett of Boston and moved to the United States in 1873 performing in New York. She returned to Europe for a while after her husband's death mostly in France before returning to New York to perform the premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 where she remained.</p> November 21, 1886.

It constitutes a thousand files devoted to actors and actresses as well as personalities from varied backgrounds. Colette Monceau née Nancey 1921-2016. The company assumed the new name Original Ballet Russe after a split between de Basil and Blum. De Basil led the renamed company while Blum and others founded a new company under the name Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. It was a large scale professional ballet company which toured extensively in Europe Australia and New Zealand the United States and Central and South America. It closed down operations in 1947. They were managed n the later years by Sol Hurok From the 1941 program; Today "S. Hurok presents" has become the hallmark of excellence.
