The 58 aquatint and heliogravure plates of this monumental suite were engraved by Georges Rouault from 1922 to 1927 and printed at the time on the initiative of Ambroise Vollard and kept by him until his death. Edition: 450 numbered copies on "Ambroise Vollard" watermarked vellum. Copy of Roger Passeron whose printing of each proof is perfect and these preserved in new condition. Gardes de soie moire anthracite, double garde de papier nuagé ocre, vert d’eau, argent, etc. Couverture illustrée d’une eau-forte et dos conservés, étui bordé (G. de Léotard 1940).

A fascinating archive of photographs relating to the famous family of Cooke's Royal Circus.<br/> <br/>The Cooke family was one of several notable families during their time of circus performers and owners that spanned several generations. In circus families family members were taught and trained in the necessary skills of various acts in the circus from a young age and then integrated into the family business. Cooke's Royal Circus was started by Thomas Cooke in Scotland around 1780 after which he and his extended family members traveled around Scotland and England doing performances. They were especially noted for their equestrian acts and continued to gain in popularity and grow to around forty participating family members by the 1830s. In 1836 Thomas Cooke's son brought the show to America where they performed in cities including New York Boston and Philadelphia before returning to Britain following a mixed reception. They continued to perform throughout the rest of the 19th century and the 20th century in both travelling shows and various "permanent" locations. Images include animal acts with elephants and horses as well as clowns stunts and other acts. Many images are captioned detailing locations including Great Britain including performances at Wembley Stadium France Italy and India. Although mostly from the 1920s the album includes a loose carte-de-visite of John Henry Cooke autographed by him on verso and dated 1874. unknown books

On offer is an original huge archive of handwritten and typescript communication and orders sent to a bookseller for books related to the circus clowns performing animals and carnivals. Circa 1970s - 1980s this archive includes many items on circus or clown letterhead business cards from circus operators and performers and postal covers with stamps from all over the USA Canada UK and Australia. While some of the letters are lists of book orders relating to the circus others are correspondence directly from the circus performers themselves many contain illustrated circus advertising as well as autographs from performers and operators. There is a sensational mix of material here.Most of the letters are addressed to Frank Barry whose book selling business was located in Philadelphia. There are 230 individual letters/postal covers with most containing several pages of enclosures with an estimated 500 pages of circus material for the collector to sort through. All of the material is in very good to fine condition with most of the envelopes/covers opened with a letter opener neatly on one end. Tall 8vo. 7.25 x 11.25 in. 24 pp unpaginated. thick cardstock w/ die-cut window slots for photos framed in green paper w/ 47 photos inserted sized from 3.25 x 4.75 in up to 4 x 5 in. a few mounted some w/ stamps on versos a few w/ pencil annotations some tipped-in a few mounted on sheets and inserted typed price list and ordering instructions on front pastedown listing many of the photos. Green linen white lettering stamped on front cover slightly shaken some rubbing edgewear still VG exemplar. Very rare photo sample catalogue assembled probably in the 1940s by Bob Parkinson noted circus collector and former director of the Circus World Museum Library and Research Center. The typed price list details the sets of images for sale such as the four photos from glass plate negatives of the Forepaugh Sells Bros. 1898 parade including images of steam calliope and 4 horse team bandwagon and 20 horse team elephant line-up followed by 2 blocks of close order units and more. In addition there are many images of 1908 and 1910 Ringling Bros. circus parades including views of the “Swan†Bandwagon and entire 24 horse team “Persia†tableau and 24 pony team side view “Egypt†tableau with the 16 camel team the entire elephant line-up riders and more. In addition there are added photos of wagons from the Al G. Barnes Circus Cole Bros. Circus later absorbed by Bailey and then Ringling Bros. as well as 101 Ranch Wild West Shows later circus parades in the 1920s the unloading of circus wagons off the Wisconsin Central Railroad flatbed cars loading docks and more. Parkinson explains that his sets for sale from $ 1.35 to $ 6.00 for all of them are taken directly from original glass plate negatives and that he is not charging much more than the printing costs and only trying to recoup his original considerable expense in purchasing the original negatives. Parkinson 1923-1991 began collecting as early as 1936 when he purchased his first Ringling-Barnum Bros. program and followed every circus show within striking distance of Decatur IL. After starting work as an insurance adjustor in 1946 he continued to chase buy & occasionally sell Circus related material assembling a massive collection of field show newspaper ads and was hired as the director of the Circus World Museum Library and Research Center in Baraboo WI from 1965 until his death.
