Carte de visite showing the Australian General Tom Thumb aka John David Armstrong who made his debut in Melbourne in 1870 and performed world wide. An uncommon image with Tom Thumb standing next to an ornately carved chair and dresser dressed in coat and tails and holding a sheaf of papers. The visit of the American Charles Stratton "Tom Thumb" and his wife Lavinia to Australia in the late 1860s as part of the PT Barnum round the world tour resulted in a huge fascination with little people worldwide. With the title below the photograph. Text on the verso: "this photograph is from the studio of G. A. Graham 8 Mersea Road. With photographers imprint: Oldham & Angle Photographers 11 Queen St. & 8 Mersea Rd. Colchester". Below the stamp: "The higher class photographs only taken by Sydney B. The colorful wrappers are chipped and lightly soiled. Color remains vivid. 2" x 1/2" piece missing near spine of rear cover old tape repair. Replete with advertisements listings of the parts of each performance a long section on the "phenomenons and abnormal creatures" each with photograph the animals and the celebrities of the circus. The circus would add the name Ringling after the 1906 season. A grand piece of circus memorabilia. Priced 10 cents on front cover. 1931A46472New York NY: Sells-Floto Circus. Good. 1931. Periodical. B&W Illustrations; This is a magazine sized periodical / souvenir program for the 1931 season. The Magazine is in Good only condition with illustrated covers and a stapled spine. The program was issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends corners and edges of the covers have wear rubbing creasing and wrinkling and the majority of the spine has tearing. The text pages are generally clean but do have tears and wrinkles and there are a couple of small bits clipped out. This program features several pages of black and white photos of the star of the show - Tom Mix. Later pages include photos of other acts including the clowns several animal acts and even a posed photo showing Jack Dempsey and Tom Mix after a bout "four fast rounds". "The circus had four elephant births three born to "Alice" and one to "Mama Mary". The sire of all four was "Snyder". None survived longer than five months. By 1929 the Sells Floto Circus was part of the American Circus Corporation which consisted of Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus the John Robinson Circus the Sparks Circus and the Al G. Barnes Circus. John Nicholas Ringling then bought American Circus Corporation for $1.7-million creating a monopoly of traveling circus in America." from Wikipedia . Sells-Floto Circus unknown
Book is in excellent condition in heavy weave dark red cloth with gilt print and cover and spine with romanesque drawing on cover and gilt top page ends. Handsome book. Corners are lightly bumped, light scuffing to covers. Binding is solid and square, exterior shows no other blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 372 pages with 112 ilustrations throughout in b&w with prints and photos. Not a cheap knock-off.
