'Counterpoint' is endorsed for merit by the Pennsylvania Poetry Society. Amelia Reynolds Long 1904-1978 Aka A. R. Long Peter Reynolds Patrick Laing was an American detective fiction and science fiction writer novelist and poet. Her story 'The Thought-Monster' was made into the 1958 film Fiend Without a Face. She co-wrote the 1936 novel Behind the Evidence with William L. Crawford under the combined pseudonym Peter Reynolds. Long's first poem 'Lucifer's Reply' was published in Kaleidograph in the early 1930's. It won first prize in a contest and remains a quite startling piece. After quitting the fields of mysteries and science fiction poetry became Long's predominant interest and she continued to write poems for the rest of her life. A number of her poems were published in various journals and periodicals such as the Nutmegger Encore The Harrisburg Evening News and The Swordsman Review. The Pennsylvania Poetry Society of which she was a member printed two chapbook collections of her previously published poetry work in 1974 Shreds and Patches and 1975 Counterpoint. Her name lives on in the Pennsylvania Poetry Society's Amelia Reynolds Long Memorial Award. It is clear that Long had a gift for creating works of studied beauty with an often poignant human touch. Her two poetry collections remain rare and elusive gems that deserve a wider audience. Hardcover. no dust jacket shelfwear to bottom edges with some exposure of boards spine lettering and illustration heavily rubbed otherwise a good sound copy. color plates chapter-head drawings Mild erotica originally published in 1898 and best remembered today if at all because of its delirious 1935 film adaptation THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich and Lionel Atwill. The illustrations color frontispiece 9 color plates with tissue-guards intact a title-page drawing and chapter-head line drawings feature lots of nekkid ladies Ms. Tice's specialty and bear captions along the lines of "She smiled with her legs as she spoke with her torso." This is stated on the limitation page to be one of "1250 copies of which 990 are for America." Although one is usually well-advised to take the professed numbers on these vintage-erotica items with a grain of salt what makes this one especially interesting though is that instead of a number written into the blank space below the statement the single word "presentation" is inked; in addition on the half-title page is a 3-inch-tall original drawing of yet another nudie that is SIGNED by Clara Tice.
