1784ABC_46946The Netherlands 1784. Large folio 52 x 33.5 cm. Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco over boards sewn on 8 supports each board with a round gold-tooled green morocco inlaid centre piece gold-tooled board edges 2 pairs of green cloth ties gilt edges and block-printed paste-paper endpapers in red and yellow. The spine is also richly gold-tooled with 2 different rolls to frame the compartments and underline the leaf and flower stamps. The front and back boards match except for the gold lettering: on the front board "konst tekeningen" and on the back board "anno 1784". The tooling shows 4 different rolls used for multiple frames and numerous stamps of leaves flowers vases birds and other decorative elements. With 18 large beautifully hand-drawn and coloured illustrations of birds. 90 ll. Splendidly bound drawing book containing 18 unsigned detailed watercolour and gouache drawings of birds. The colourful birds appear to be drawn after the plates in Edward Donovan's The natural history of British birds first published in instalments between 1794 and 1819. If so the present drawings must have been added to the drawing book at least 10 years after it was bound. The blank drawing-book was bound according to the gold lettering on the back board in 1784 and the tools identify it as the work of the most important and arguably the best bindery in the 18th-century Netherlands dubbed the First Stadholder Bindery by Storm van Leeuwen. Since the names of the binders remain unknown the name now used alludes to the fact that it produced many bindings by order of the Stadholder Willem V and presumably his father Willem IV. Its great importance rests on the number of its surviving bindings the diversity of the work it produced the quality of the tooling the exceptionally large number of binding tools it must have owned and the length of time it must have been operating from at least 1722 to 1793 Storm van Leeuwen. The paper is laid with no watermark and appears to be quite consistent.Occasional minor foxing but otherwise internally fine and clean. The binding shows only slight signs of wear so both the album and the binding are in very good condition. A sumptuously bound album of attractive illustrations of British birds.l For the binding: Jan Storm van Leeuwen Bookbinding 18th century IIA pp. 67-101; for images of the rolls etc.: Jan Storm van Leeuwen De achttiende-eeuwse Haagse boekband pp. 388-395. 1815G4JCUY01U79OFrance 1815. 20th-century red goatskin morocco sewn on 5 cords with the title "Gouaches érotiques" in gold in the 2nd of 6 spine compartments double-combed marbled endpapers pasted over the original marbled pastdown; spot pattern curled. 4to 26 x 21.5 cm. A matching set of 12 erotic drawings image area about 20 x 16 cm in coloured gouaches each showing a man and woman engaged in manual vaginal or oral sex in a richly furnished interior with furniture lamps clocks vases drapery mirrors books clothing architectural ornamentation etc. Each is drawn on thick paperboard and mounted on the album leaves. A matching set of 12 skilfully executed erotic gouache drawings in numerous colours each showing a naked or more often partly undressed young man and woman engaged in manual vaginal or oral sex. Each is set in an interior in at least most cases domestic most of them richly furnished. Though the drawings depict several different men and women some of them seem to appear in more than one drawing. One drawing appears to show a home library another includes a case full of books and two others have an open book lying on the floor. Another has the woman sitting on the man's lap before a writing desk with a quill pen in her hand. These may be intended to suggest that the man is the young lady's tutor and they got distracted from their lessons. The clothing suggests couples from fairly high social standing. The clothing architectural decoration furniture clocks lamps vases etc. much of it in Empire Style suggest a date around 1815 perhaps in France. The drawings are in good condition and the binding fine. unknown

Japan: ca. 1855-63.

With the first demonstration of steam power in Japan thanks to Commodore Perry’s visit in July of 1853 the feudal domains immediately began to organize the construction of a fleet of large Western-style warships. By the August 1853 arrival in Nagasaki of the Russian Admiral Yevfimy Putyatin who gave a demonstration of a steam engine on his ship the Palladia. Hisashige Tanaka 1799-1881 the founder of the future Toshiba Corporation and the “Thomas Edison of Japan†promptly copied these models and built Japan’s first steam engine. The first steam-powered warship to enter the Japanese navy was the Kanko Maru given by the Dutch government in 1855. Western naval technologies were quickly assimilated; the earliest Japanese steam-powered warships were based on Dutch shipbuilding manuals and with direct assistance from Dutch representatives. In 1863 Japan completed is first domestically built steam warship the Chiyodagata. Following the humiliations at the hands of foreign navies in the Bombardment of Kagoshima in 1863 the shogunate began to rely more on French and British warship technologies.

The large drawing of the steam engine and its parts is captioned in trans.: “The steamship’s measurements: length is ca. 50 meters width is ca. 11 meters and depth is ca. 7 meters. Steam engine’s structure and the parts described with measurements.†From right to left we see about thirty of the parts of the steam engine often with katakana labels and measurements the latter written in red ink. On the farthest left of this sheet is a remarkable and fine drawing 770 x 380 mm. in brush with wash in various grays yellow and pink of the assembled engine.

On the first leaf of the series of 12 numbered sheets of drawings of the naval architecture of the proposed warship a label pasted-on states in trans.: “The 12 sheets of illustrations are copies of red-haired origin of the ship.†These sheets contain hundreds of drawings many heightened with gray wash and many with specific measurements of various aspects of the ship’s design in preparation for construction. Included are numerous depictions of the hull deck bulkheads rudders winches and gears from different viewpoints and of structural and strengthening elements with many manuscript labels in katakana of Dutch terms.

There is some worming on the sheets which does touch some drawings and characters but it is not offensive. unknown

About the artist: Jean Auscher 1896-c. 1950 was a 20th century French artist caricaturist and illustrator. Auscher was a pupil at l’Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. His work was exhibited at Le Salon d'Automne and Le Salon des Tuileries between 1923 and 1933. His most characteristic work recorded the life "des Années Folles" in the Paris of the 1920s including scenes in the casinos gambling clubs and dance halls evoking the decadence of the demi-monde. He also recorded the theatrical community with portraits of actors some in their famous roles such as Louis Jouvet as "Le Trouhadec indigne" and the clown Grock. His best-known work appeared in limited edition folios published by the artist himself "La Faune des Dancings" 1925 and "Le Baccara" circa 1926. Many copies of the lithographs contained in these were heightened with watercolor. He contributed to the satirical journal "Le Rire"; he also illustrated works by Irène Némirovsky who was rediscovered when "Suite Française" was republished in 2004. Andre Haguenauer "Les Amertumes" 1925 and Alfred Machard "Printemps Sexuel" provided Auscher with subject matter that was again towards the margins of conventional attitudes to sexuality. Binding: Expertly rebacked contemporary full calf preserving mottled calf boards gilt dentelled borders flanked by single and double filleted ruling; spine with five raised bands compartments with central gilt marine motifs and gilt lettered title on red morocco label on two; all edges uncut. Notes: Captain James Wilson 1760–1814 commanded the British ship Duff which the London Missionary Society contracted in 1797 to convey a team of missionariesto their posts in Tahiti Tonga and the Marquesas Islands. Wilson surveyed locations of numerous islands in the Pacific including Vanua Balavu Fulaga and Ogea Levu in Fiji Mangareva in the Gambier Islands Pukarua in the Tuamotus and Satawal Elato and Lamotrek in the Caroline Islands. Three years after the establishment of the British mission in Tahiti the directors of the Society appointed a committee to consider a suitable memorial for presentation to Wilson for his services in helping to establish the first mission in the South Seas. He published an account of his voyage: A Missionary Voyage to the Southern Pacific Ocean in 1799.
“This voyage was undertaken by the London Missionary Society for the purpose of establishing a mission in Tahiti. A settlement of twenty-five persons was formed. The king of the Islands befriended them but they met with continual difficulties from the civil wars and finally had to flee to Australia returning however in 1815 to Tahiti…. Includes many valuable details regarding Tahiti the Fiji Islands the Marquesas etc. A new group of islands was found among the Santa Cruslands and named the Duff Group…. The account is of extraordinary interest for its fresh and sometimes naïve viewpoint and for its descriptions of customs passed over by the nautical and geographical explorer.†Cox II:307. “Almost certainly two printers were employed by Chapman in order to speed up the job of publishing this quarto. This edition printed by Gillet is sometimes called the second edition; however the terms ‘coarse-paper’ ‘small-paper’ or ‘laid paper edition’ would be more correct. One may refer to them as the Gosnell edition and the Gillet edition. The text in both printings is the same but the list of subscribers in each is completely different the Gosnell edition having twelve pages and the Gillet edition having only seven which are not alphabetized. A careful study of these lists gives the distinct impression that the Gosnell edition is the earlier and the more expensive volume. As in the Gosnell edition the Advertisement to this edition also states: ‘The body of the journal is the composition of Mr. William Wilson from the captain’s papers his own and the missionaries’ reports.’†Hill 1895 “The anonymous editor of this book was Dr. Thomas Haweis one of the founders of the London Missionary Society. The long “preliminary discourse†was anonymously written by Samuel Greatheed using the then-unpublished narrative of James Morrison one of the pardoned ‘Bounty’ mutineers. Morrison’s manuscript was also the source for the extensive appendix on Tahiti. Indeed William Wilson and James Morrison may be called co-authors of this book.†Hill 1894 Size: Large quarto 285x220.
