in-4° (cm 25 x 18); Tomus primus de Romanis Aereis seu Senatus consulto percussis; Tomus secundus de Aureis et Argenteis; pp. (12), 183, (13); (4), 180, (14); vignette ai frontespizi; numerosissime incisioni calcografiche riproducenti monete e medaglioni; bellissime incisioni in rame ai capilettera ed alle testate del primo tomo; leg. del 18esimo secolo in mezza pelle marrone chiaro e carta marmorizzata ai piatti, preziosi decori al dorso liscio, con filetti dorati ai finti nervi e titolo in oro al tassello sul dorso, guardie in carta marmorizzata, tagli finemente marmorizzati; l'opera era già stata pubblicata a Parigi in prima ed. nel 1674, poi diverse ed. tra cui questa e altre sino al 1692; quindi furono pubblicate altre due ed. ad Amsterdam nel 1695 e 1696; il Tomo primo comprende una dedica a cura dell'autore (Epistola), una prefazione (Praefatio); il testo è impreziosito da numerosissime note informative (molte sulla vita degli imperatori raffigurati sulle monete riportate nel testo). Erudita opera storico-numismatica di Jean Foy-Vaillant (1632-1706), importante in quanto riporta informazioni su valori e rarita delle singole monete; la prima parte tratta delle monete in bronzo e la seconda di quelle in oro e argento. Prov.: integrazioni e correzioni in latino, nonché sottolineature vergate a mano da un possessore del libro, certamente un collezionista o un esperto numismatico. Nella Historia l’argomento è la liberazione dell’anima di Traiano per le preghiere di Gregorio papa: “Nel compilare questa ‘arringa’ il dotto spagnolo spese energie ed erudizione al fine di difendere la veridicità di una diffusissima e popolare leggenda medievale in cui si intrecciano due narrazioni. Le indichiamo nell'ordine cronologico dei fatti narrati. Una è l’aneddoto, sfruttato anche da Dante, in cui Traiano esercita la giustizia a favore della povera vedova il cui figlio è stato assassinato. L'altra narrazione riguarda la salvezza dell’imperatore, pagano ma caritatevole, per l'intercessione successiva di papa San Gregorio Magno (vissuto nel VI sec.)”, in: Le scene finali delle due guerre daciche raffigurate sulla colonna Traiana”, Uniroma 1) Nel Tractatus Chacon sostiene la tesi del cardinalato di Gerolamo basandosi su studi iconografici. Chacon o Ciacconio (1530-1599) fu un dotto domenicano spagnolo, particolarmente esperto di storia dei papi, epigrafia, paleografia medievale (vedi DBI ad vocem).
