Two huge color aquatint / etchings depicting surreal gnome-like musicians. Printed on fine Arches wove paper. Each of the prints is signed, titled, and justified by the artist in pencil. Plates measure 20 x 13 inches (51 x 33 cm), sheets measure 30 x 23 inches (76 x 58.5 cm). Printed in delicate tones of purple and orange. Originally, this set was to be published in an edition of 75, but the publisher died before the project was completed. Finally only a few impressions were actually printed and signed, and THESE PRINTS HAVE NEVER BEFORE BEEN OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC. In absolutely perfect condition, like new. Price is for the set of 2 prints together.

Très bel ensemble regroupant les vignettes en plusieurs états dessinées et gravées par les frères Hillemacher pour le Théâtre de Racine, imprimé à Paris par D. Jouaust 1873 - 1874 et pour Le Lutrin de Boileau-Despreaux, publié en 1862. L'album regroupe, pour le Théâtre de Racine. 157 vignettes en deux formats 12,5 x 18,5cm et 6 x 10,5cm, en plusieurs états, de 1 à 4, des contre-épreuves et des vignettes de rebut. Pour Le Lutrin de Boileau-Despreaux : 31 vignettes en deux formats 15, 5 x 20, 5cm et 11 x 17cm, en plusieurs états, et avec des planches d'essais non publiées. Toutes les vignettes sont contrecollées sur des pages de beau papier dessin fort, montées sur onglets et cousues. En tête d'ouvrage deux grandes vignettes 12 x 18,5cm, gravures allégoriques, portant le nom d'Ernest Hillemacher. Les mentions d'état sont manuscrites. Ex-libris Bibliothèque Frédéric Hillemacher et deuxième ex-libris portant "nec ridendo vellicat" (Paul-Emile Daurand-Forgues connu sous le pseudonyme de Old Nick ou de Tim). Tout laisse à penser que cet album a été constitué par F. Hillemacher lui même. Joint : 3 lettres manuscrites signées de Frédéric Hillemacher et datées pour deux d'entre elles 1867 - 1879, contrecollées sur papier dessin libre. Destinataire non identifié mais texte bien en rapport avec la gravure et une lettre manuscrite d' Ernest Hillemacher à Monsieur Laugee, artiste peintre, à Paris dans laquelle il lui envoie deux couplets du vaudeville Lantara. Quelques frottements en dos, coiffe fragile avec mors détachés sur environ deux centimètres, coins un peu émoussés, rares rousseurs, une planche détachée. Exemplaire unique.

Visat, pressier. Tirage limité numéroté à 265 exemplaires, celui-ci n°220 sur vélin d'Arches. La reliure est frottée sur le haut du dos, sinon bon état pour ce titre peu courant.
A portfolio of eleven stunning cubist / surrealist etchings (with drypoint) by Philippon, each numbered (15/15) and signed by the artist in pencil. Edition limited to 15 sets, all printed on fine wove paper. Philippon, although little known, was a very talented printmaker. The images include three female nudes, four town views, one interior, one portrait, and two depictions of the port of St-Tropez. 4to. Loose as issued in folding sheet. Cover a bit soiled and damaged, but the etchings are fine and bright, and have never been matted or framed. Extremely rare.
Portfolio of 10 exquisite landscape etchings by Pierre Bazire, each of which is JUSTIFIED (10/15) AND SIGNED IN PENCIL. These etchings evoke the rustic, pastoral landscapes of southern France, bathed in soft sunlight. Additionally there is a title/justification leaf (signed by Gustave Arthur Dassonville, for whom the edition was printed) with an eleventh etching, and another signed proof of that etching (so 12 etchings in all, of which 11 are full-page, loose, signed, and justified). Printed on fine Arches wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in cloth portfolio with paper label. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. Very rare (only 20 sets were printed: 1-15 and I-V).
