197197383Rabat Morocco August 16 1971. 1971. - Over 140 words typed in French on the Prince's 8-1/4 inch high by 6-1/8 inch wide royal stationery with a crown above Maghrebi script printed in indigo at top right. In his letter addressed to Vice President Spiro Agnew's chief of staff Arthur Sohmer Prince Moulay Abdallah of Morocco requests that Art Sohmer convey his warm regards and thanks to the Vice President for sending him a physical therapist "Je vous prie de transmettre a Monsieur le Vice-President S. AGNEW mes chaleureux remerciements pour la delicate attention qu'il a eue a mon egard en depechant aupres de moi un reeducateur". Vice President Agnew visited King Hassan II of Morocco on July 25th 1971 only a couple weeks after the attempted coup during which Prince Moulay Abdullah of Morocco was wounded. The prince goes on to praise the skills and personality of the therapist which the Vice President had sent him and apologizes for not having been able to attend the dinner which the American Ambassador had hosted in the Vice President's honor. He further expresses his thanks to Art Sohmer for the latter's own personal contribution and gesture of friendship: "Je tiens a vous remercier pour votre contribution personnelle a ce geste si amical qui m'a particulierement touche". Signed by Prince Moulay Abdullah in Maghrebi script. The letter is creased at the corners and stapled to the original mailing envelope with the oval red ink seal of the prince's "Secretariat Particulier" with the prince's name above the image of the Prince's crown. The envelope also bear's the Office of the Vice President's blue stamp. The Department of State's stamp together with the October 14th date is stamped in blue on the verso of the letter. Penciled at the top left of the letter is a request for a translation likely written by Art Sohmer: "State: Translation & suggested reply if appropriate".
Accompanying Prince Moulay Abdullah's letter which was written in French is an official "Office of the Vice President / Referral" form addressed to Mr. James L. Carson director of the State Department's Secretarial Staff. This form dated October 12 1971 and signed by Major P.D. Slack the Marine Corps Aide to the Vice President requests that the letter be translated for Art Sohmer and the Vice President's benefit. The translation typed on 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide "Department of State Division of Language Services" letterhead accompanies the letter. A referral number is stamped at the top of the Prince's letter as well as at the top of the referral form and the translation references this number.
The brother of King Hassan II of Morocco Prince Moulay Abdullah of Morocco 1935-1983 was married to Lamia Solh the daughter of Lebanon's first Prime Minister. On July 10 1971 General Mohamed Medbouh who was disillusioned by King Hassan's light treatment of staff members who were shown to have been shaking down foreign companies and convinced that the King may himself be involved led a coup attempt. Conspiring with other military officers Medbouh enlisted a force of 1200 cadets to storm the palace during the King's birthday reception where according to different sources between 400 to 800 guests were present. 92 people were killed in the attempted coup and many more injured including Prince Moulay Abdullah Ben Mohammad. Royalist troops overcame the rebels killing more than a hundred cadets and capturing another 900 and their officers. Two weeks later on July 25 1971 Vice President Agnew visited Morocco. In his book "Hunting the President: Threats Plots and Assassination Attempts." Mel Ayton quotes Chuck Vance who served on President Ford's protective detail and who described the risks of foreign visits by U.S. Presidents & Vice Presidents: "There's going to be some razzle dazzle so people aren't quite clear who to attack. They'll have military personnel everywhere: frogmen ships and aircraft. I called in a whole naval fleet one time in a Moroccan visit for Vice President Agnew because of political uncertainties" no doubt referring to this visit. It was during this visit that Agnew referred or sent the physical therapist to the Prince. Prince Moulay Abdullah who was a favorite of his father passed away from cancer in 1983 at the age of 48. Stade Moulay Abdullah stadium was named after him.
Spiro T. Agnew 1918-1996 was Governor of Maryland and Vice President of the United States under Nixon. He was indicted for tax fraud and forced to resign.
The recipient Arthur J. Sohmer 1926-1991 was Chief-of-Staff to Vice President Spiro T. Agnew. Rabat, Morocco, August 16, 1971. unknown

The work was first published in Spanish at Amsterdam in four parts between 1632 and 1651. By providing a harmonization of all the apparent contradictions within the Hebrew Scriptures he hoped to encourage converso Jews of Iberian descent who had lost touch with their religious heritage to make the return to rabbinic Judaism. The present volume deals with the Pentateuch Five Books of Moses; the second volume treats the Prophetic books and the Hagiographa Writings. The work was first published a year earlier in a Spanish language edition.

The work attempts resolution to no less than 180 seeming discrepancies in the Pentateuch. The breadth of Menasseh's encyclopedic knowledge is vast the Conciliador contains citations from 221 Jewish and 54 non-Jewish authorities. "No reader could fail to be impressed by the amazing range of titles which the author proudly appended to the work" Roth. References: Kayserling p. 69; C. The Amsterdam printer and publisher Hendrick Laurensz Lauretius provided the financing for this edition along with two other Bible editions and two editions of the Hebrew Psalms printed by Menasseh between 1631 and 1646. "These publications were not only made for the local market but mainly for international trade. Thanks to this financial help Menasseh was able to organize his printing office in a more professional way" Fuks hiring a Jewish compositor Judah Leb ben Mordecai Gimple from Posen and a gentile compositor Bartholomeus Laurensz.

The printing activity of Menasseh was especially important in the steadily growing productions of the Hebrew press in the Northern Netherlands. Fulfilling the needs of the Sephardic community for Jewish ritual texts eliminated the need for expensive imports from Venice and Poland. Menasseh undersood that the relatively cheap paper and tools available in Amsterdam made it possible to compete in quality and prices with the Hebrew presses of Poland Italy and Basel. "Gentile publishers and booksellers in Amsterdam such as Jansonius and Laurentius were quick to see the opportunity of the opening Eastern European market and financed several of Menasseh's publications" Fuks. Menasseh was the first to introduce in the Netherlands waybertaytsch types for Yiddish publications along with illustrated Hebrew books. He was also the first Jewish printer to adopt the Dutch pocket-book format made famous by the Elzeviers.

Notes on publication date and issue: The title is dated 1630 in Arabic numerals; the colophon notes the date of completion in Hebrew characters as 5 Adar 5391 = 7 February 1631 along with the printer's apology for being unable to provide the index of pericopes promised on the title-page due to lack of printing material. Darlow and Moule describe this issue as Variant A with a Latin imprint appearing in the cartouche beneath the Hebrew title.

Provenance and annotations: early entry in brown ink at front paste-down with short Greek inscription Theos. dated 1700; old Latin inscription in black ink at top margin title in reference to Hebrew roots; date of 1812 beside Yiddish entry penned in black ink within imprint cartouche at title; old entry in German penned in black ink at verso title beneath which is an oval cartouche in imitation of the one at the title in which an owner has penned in black ink the Hebrew imprint information regarding Hendrick Laurensz as it would appear in the Varient B issue; old library shelf marks at rear paste-down; recent owner entry in blue ink in Hebrew at front paste-down. "After this David Wilkins gave the public an edition from a Cambridge manuscript of which the text was more pure and more complete. The critic should unite both these editions the former for the value of its learned notes and the latter for its full and accurate text†The Biblical Repertory.

The Coptic scholar David Wilkens 1685–1745 was born of Prussian parentage in Memel Lithuania. Little is known about his education in Germany probably in Berlin or how he acquired his knowledge of ancient and Semitic languages which was extensive rather than profound. He referred to the antiquarian Ezechiel Spanheim the elector of Brandenburg's ambassador in England from 1701 to 1710 as his former teacher. By 1707 Wilkins was studying at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and had encountered a group of clerical protectors in London. In 1709 engaged in preparing a history of the patriarchs of Alexandria which remained in manuscript and the editio princeps of the Coptic Bohairic New Testament the Novum Testamentum Aegyptium 1716 he left for the continent. He called on scholars examined manuscripts in Vienna Rome and Paris and stopped in Amsterdam in 1714 to see to the publication of his first works -- an edition of the Aramaic paraphrasis of the books of Chronicles and an Armenian version of the apocryphal third epistle to the Corinthians 1715 -- and of John Chamberlayne's polyglot edition of the Lord's prayer to which he contributed. Wilkins was an industrious scholar. In the three years he spent as librarian at Lambeth he made important contributions to the cataloguing of manuscripts. In 1721 he edited the Anglo-Saxon laws in 1725–6 the complete works of John Selden and in 1731 the Coptic Pentateuch. His main work was his Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae an account of British church councils from 446 to 1717. Wilkins had many detractors -- John Gagnier the professor of Arabic at Oxford who deplored his incompetence in Arabic and Hebrew Edward Harley who described him as ‘a very great scoundrel’ and the cantankerous Thomas Hearne who as librarian at the Bodleian had watched him turn from a young man ‘of a civil Courteous and modest behaviour’ into ‘a vain ambitious man of little judgement tho' great industry’ ready to ‘do anything in the World for a little Money’ Alastair Hamilton: "Wilkens David" -- ODNB online.

Provenance: From the library of G.H.A. French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet 1861-1929 met his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim 1870-1953 in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where the latter met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet collaborated on several other works including a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made to Mecca after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The gorgeous binding by Henri Blanchetière 1881-1933 utilizes rich jewel tones scalloped edges and complex gilt scrolling patterns calling to mind Islamic art and architecture and echoing Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. After training with Marcellin Lortic and René Kieffer Blanchetière took over the atelier of binder Joseph Brétault in 1906 at which time "he aligned himself with Marius-Michel in the pursuit of a modern binding style inspired by nature. His designs incorporated a cautious blend of Art Nouveau flowers" and "after World War I he gradually cut his remaining ties to traditionalism." Duncan & De Bartha As a craftsman of artistic fine bindings Blanchetière ranks with Kieffer and Charles Meunier but his bindings are less commonly seen in the marketplace. H. Piazza unknown

Verso of front free endpaper with bookplate of John R. Menzies. Carteret IV 140. ◆Spine lightly sunned one tiny spot on half title but A VERY FINE COPY clean fresh and bright internally and in a binding with no signs of wear.

This is a strikingly bound deluxe copy of the first book produced by the French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet and his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim. The text of three Saharan folktales related here by Sliman are illustrated with Dinet's sensuous watercolors and the whole is bound with great animation and skill by Otto Schulze of Edinburgh. Dinet and Sliman met in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where he met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet also collaborated on a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The binding here is reminiscent of an Oriental carpet and echoes Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. Operating during the first 10 or 15 years of the 20th century Otto Schulze was an Edinburgh publisher whose books sometimes appeared in bindings said to have been done by him. As in the case of other publishers and booksellers such bindings often were done for rather than by the party whose name is stamp-signed on the volume. Bindings signed by Schulze are consistently attractive but are not common: since 1975 ABPC has listed six such morocco bindings two of them described as "elaborate" or "extra." Since our volume says that the binding is by--and not for--Schulze we can only assume that our publisher had an in-house binder. From 1906 until his death in 1935 our previous owner John R. Menzies was chairman of John Menzies & Co. founded in Edinburgh in 1833 by his father. The firm sold books magazines and newspapers becoming with W. H. Smith one of two major newsagents in the United Kingdom in the 20th century until bought out by its rival in 1990. H. Piazza et Cie unknown
