1842015196Paris: Archives Israélites De France 1842. Half-Leather. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The two volumes are bound together and Volume One is missing the title page and its verso the copyright page. The marbled boards are rubbed the gilt print on the spine faded and the head of the spine strip damaged; The back end paper and the back paste down are stained possibly by smoke; both hinges have been reinforced with tape which have stained the verso of the pages; there are illegible biro annotations on the front end paper as well as pencil scribbles which appear infrequently throughout the book. Surprisingly these are not irritating. There is intermittent minor damp staining at the tail's hinge and an ink stain on page one of Volume One; page xxiii has 4 closed tears none of which impact on the print. One tear has been repaired with clear tape as have tears on pp. 155 - 158 in Volume Two; Also in Volume Two page 95 has not been cut properly by the printers and the edge overshoots the covers. Minor intermittent foxing throughout. Despite its faults it remains an attractive copy: it's solid clean and nice to handle. Volume I xxxiii and 271 pages including contents' page. Volume Two 262 pages and a contents' page. ". Ben-Lévi pseud. Substantial volume 240 by 160mm 9½ by 6¼ inches containing the dramatic works masques etc of the Jacobean poet Ben Jonson best known for his play Volpone. Full brown leather with gilt decoration to both boards. Raised bands to spine with gilt title and gilt decoration to the remaining compartments. Date of 1838 in gilt to tail of spine. Gilt to all edges. Marbled endpapers. Frontis portrait. Barry Cornwall was the pseudonym of writer Bryan Proctor who though little known now was at the centre of a literary circle all his life and to whom Thackeray dedicated Vanity Fair and Wilkie Collins dedicated The Woman In White. Proctor was also the father of Queen Victoria's favourite poet Adelaide Anne Procter. Leather faded to almost a red on the spine. Gilt is bright. Slightly bumped to corners. Rubbed to edges but joints remain sound and firm. Dark water mark to prelims just catching the tip of the corner of the frontis portrait and the same to the illustration to the title page and marking several the central few inches of all the prelims. Main text is clean. Good sound copy . Hardback. 1838. Edward Moxon, hardcover

Bahya Bechaiji ben Joseph was a Jewish philosopher and rabbi who lived in Saragossa Spain in the first half of the 11th century. This work was written by him in 1040 under the title "Al Hidayah ila Faraid al-Qulub and translated into Hebrew by Judah ibn Tibbon in the mid-11th century with the title "Choboth Ha-L'Baboth." Text in German gothic script Hebrew and some Arabic. Heavy age wear and abrasions on binding. Some soiling and water staining on first few pages. Hinges starting.
