2013147189Princeton: Princeton University Press 2013. Later printing of this collection of lectures given by the former chief of the Federal Reserve. Octavo original wrappers. Boldly signed by the author on the half-title page "Best wishes Ben Bernanke." Also laid in is a signed business card from Bernanke. In near fine condition. In 2012 Ben Bernanke chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve gave a series of lectures about the Federal Reserve and the 2008 financial crisis as part of a course at George Washington University on the role of the Federal Reserve in the economy. In this unusual event Bernanke revealed important background and insights into the central bank's crucial actions during the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Taken directly from these historic talks The Federal Reserve and the Financial Crisis offers insight into the guiding principles behind the Fed's activities and the lessons to be learned from its handling of recent economic challenges. Bernanke traces the origins of the Federal Reserve from its inception in 1914 through the Second World War and he looks at the Fed post-1945 when it began operating independently from other governmental departments such as the Treasury. During this time the Fed grappled with episodes of high inflation finally tamed by then-chairman Paul Volcker. Bernanke also explores the period under his predecessor Alan Greenspan known as the Great Moderation. Bernanke then delves into the Fed's reaction to the recent financial crisis focusing on the central bank's role as the lender of last resort and discussing efforts that injected liquidity into the banking system. Bernanke points out that monetary policies alone cannot revive the economy and he describes ongoing structural and regulatory problems that need to be addressed. Providing first-hand knowledge of how problems in the financial system were handled The Federal Reserve and the Financial Crisis will long be studied by those interested in this critical moment in history. Contemporary quarter calf over spotted paper covered boards with handwritten title label on spine. Raised bands. Publisher's engraved vignette on title. Decorative tailpiece.

First edition of "Yam Shel Shelomo" the Seal of Solomon Luria's major work of Halakha written on sixteen tractates of the Talmud; however it is extant on only seven.

In it the author analyzes key sugyot passages and decides between various authorities as to the practical halacha.

Luria famously objected to Isserles's method of presenting halakhic rulings without discussing their derivation. He wrote "Yam Shel Shlomo" to 'probe the depths of the halacha' and to clarify the process by which those halachot are reached.

Binding partly rubbed along edges. Head and tail of spine chipped. Title label partly missing. Contemporary previous owner's signature at upper margin of title page not affecting lettering. Minor worming along fore-edge of pages 34 to 84 not affecting lettering. Some offsetting and minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Hebrew. Binding in overall fair interior in good to good condition. About the author: Solomon ben Jehiel Luria Rashal/Maharshal 1510-1574 was a celebrated Jewish Talmudic commentator who served as rabbi and rosh yeshivah at Ostrog Brisk and Lublin. His halakhic rulings were independent and avoided pilpul and were generally accepted. Only a proportion of his work has been preserved including his "Yam shel Shelomo" The Seal of Solomon and his "Hokhmat Shelomo" The Wisdom of Solomon 1582. His "Responsa" 1574/5 gives valuable insight into the culture of 16th-century Polish Jewry. [Unidentified] hardcover
1948140123Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1948. Vintage still photograph from the set of the 1948 film. Featuring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland laughing together in conversation while then-toddler Liza Minnelli tugs on her mother's hand in the foreground. Mimeograph snipe and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer rubber stamp to the verso.

A highly fictionalized and especially glamorous account of the creative partnership between Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers. The star-studded film billed as "the biggest musical in Technicolor" was a hit at the box office though still barely able to recoup its heavy production costs. Rooney and Garland's final on-screen appearance together.

The film was criticized for having sanitized the mental health problems and self-destructive behavior Hart suffered from that ultimately led to the break-up of the partnership as well as for omitting any mention of his homosexuality instead fabricating a fictional romantic attachment to a "Peggy McNeil."

Set in New York City and Los Angeles.

8 x 10 inches. Original lithographed poster with text and illustrations printed in black grey and brown on white stock measuring 22 1/8" x 14 1/8" 56cm x 35.75cm. Faint diagonal crease and some foxing to margins at upper left corner with some very faint foxing on verso; unbacked; Near Fine.

Poster for an off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge which Shahn had seen during a rehearsal and found "very powerful very moving." "The central figures in this poster closely resemble the tender gouple in Shahn's 1968 lithograph Memories of many nights of love in the Rilke Portfolio. However the two are clearly taken from different drawings. Here again is an example of how Shahn convincingly reused favored images in different contexts. The lettering of the play's title illustrates the integral role of Shahn's calligraphy played in many of his compositions particularly as contrasted with the dull perfection of the machine-lettered message below" PRESCOTT 163. Isaac Aboab was an early 14th century Spanish Talmudic scholar and Kabbalist. "The Menorah of Light" is a collection of midrashic sermons. Per the Jewish Encyclopedia: "It has won considerable fame for the author though in his humility he assures his readers that he composed it chiefly for his own use as a public speaker. But besides this it has contributed probably more than any other medieval book to the popularization of rabbinical lore and to the religious edification and elevation of the masses. It belongs to that class of ethical works which sprang up in the thirteenth century in a time of reaction against the one-sided manner in which the Talmudic studies had been previously pursued.'. It was published with a Spanish translation Leghorn 1657 with a Hebrew commentary and a Judæo-German translation by Moses Frankfurter Amsterdam 1701 with a modern German translation by Fürstenthal and Behrend Krotoschin 1844-46.
