The proponents of the Bible House have given consideration to the fact that every spiritual idea for it to exist and exert influence needs a physical structure too a central home. The uniqueness of Jerusalem the city of the prophets and the capital of Israel makes it appropriate that a House be established in it to collect inside every commentary book and creation that has been thought of and created in Judaism through the generations regarding the Book of Books and every creation by the sages of the nations of the world that displays the influence of the Bible. The House with its book collections and educational exhibits will serve as a place of study for the lovers of Torah the youth and adults who will come to it in order to increase their knowledge of the Book of Books and its interpretations. The House will also serve as a gravitational center for residents of this country when they go up to Jerusalem and to tourists from the Diaspora who will be able to absorb in it the spirit of the Book of Books. More details about the House's content and its purpose can be found in the attached brochure which contains things said during the ground breaking ceremony. The initiating committee hopes you will agree to lend a helping hand to the establishment of this cultural center in Jerusalem. 21623
BEN-GURION DAVID. 1886-1973. Polish-born Israeli statesman who became Israel's first prime minister after proclaiming its independence in 1948. ALS. "D. Ben Gurion". 1p. Postcard. Jerusalem March 6 1955. To Israeli historian and politician BEN-ZION DINUR 1884-1973. In Hebrew with translation. The postcard bears a postal cancellation that commemorates the 40th anniversary of the formation of Trumpeldor's famous Zionist Mule Corps.

"On the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the 'Zionist Mule Corps' by Joseph Trumpeldor and his friends the youth should know more about the personal example set by the members of the Second Aliyah whose actions and heroism have become the personal educator of the people…"

An early Zionist Ben-Gurion moved to Palestine in 1906 to take up farming. Following his expulsion by Turkey at the outbreak of World War I he rallied British and American support to promote increased Jewish immigration to Palestine and after spending decades strengthening Palestine's Jewish community Ben-Gurion proclaimed the birth of Israel on May 14 1948. He assisted in creating the Israeli army often using military force to thwart Arab violence. After announcing his intention to leave public life Ben-Gurion moved to the newly founded Negev Kibbutz Sde-Boker in early 1954. He never completely abdicated his leadership role however and in February 1955 Ben-Gurion returned to public life first as minister of defense in which capacity he penned our letter. Following his tenure as defense minister he was reelected prime minister in November 1955.

Born in Pyatigorsk in the North Caucasus Joseph Trumpeldor 1880-1920 abandoned his training as a dentist to join the Russian army in 1902 losing an arm during the Russo-Japanese War. He returned to active duty as quickly as possible but was taken prisoner by the Japanese. After regaining his freedom he became the most decorated Jewish soldier in the Russian army and the first Jew to be offered an officer's commission. However because of his disability Trumpeldor resigned from the military to study law. Increasingly interested in Zionism's goal of establishing a Jewish homeland Trumpeldor immigrated to Palestine Erez Israel in 1911 then part of the Ottoman Empire where he lived and worked on several collective farms while helping defend Jewish settlements in the Lower Galilee.

With the outbreak of World War I in 1914 the Russian-born Trumpeldor became an enemy alien in Ottoman Palestine and was deported to Egypt where he organized his fellow deportees into a military organization created to assist the British liberation of Palestine from the Ottomans. In 1915 Trumpeldor established the Zion Mule Corps or Jewish Legion part of the 38th and 42nd Battalions of Royal Fusiliers and the subject of our letter. Most of the Jewish volunteers were sent to the Dardanelles during the Gallipoli Campaign where they fought heroically against the Turks. They returned to Egypt and the corps disbanded in 1916.

By 1919 Trumpeldor had returned to Palestine where he was instrumental in the immigration of Russian-Jewish soldiers to British-occupied Palestine. On March 1 1920 the Jewish farming village of Tel Hai in the Upper Galilee's Hulah Valley came under attack by Shiite gangs from neighboring Lebanon who were searching for French soldiers. Anticipating trouble a militia led by Trumpeldor and organized by the Jewish defense organization Hashomer arrived and a skirmish broke out resulting in a number of casualties on both sides including the fatally-wounded Trumpeldor who had been shot in the stomach. His last words were reported to have been "Never mind it is good to die for our country" "Ein davar tov lamut be'adartzeinu" an expression that became as famous as Nathan Hale's "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Trumpeldor remains to this day one of Israel's greatest military heroes.

Born in the Russian Empire Dinur became involved in Zionist activities around the turn of the century. He immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he continued his academic career as a scholar of Jewish history. At the time of our letter Dinur was a professor at Hebrew University as well as a member of the Knesset and Minister of Education and Culture succeeding Ben-Gurion in that post and serving from October 1951 until November 1955.

Written on an Israel Post postcard bearing a March 8 1955 Jerusalem post mark and a second ink postal cancellation in Hebrew and English commemorating the Zion Mule Corps. 196921223
DAVID BEN-GURION.Autograph Letter Signed to Avraham Zvion December 26 1969. 2 pp. in Hebrew on off-white faintly-lined sheets 4⅞ x 8⅜ in.

Translation
26.12.69

Sde-Boker

Dear Zvion

I'm sorry for writing you things that until recently I hadn't realized that I would be required to. That's because I have admired all these years the work you've done for the Midrasha.

However your actions following our conversation when we both agreed after a long discussion that you won't be leaving the school's management right now but only at the end of this year and meanwhile you'll assist the new person that will be assigned here to prepare the new education program for the Midrasha – initial university studies. You will then take two years off as education leave and afterwards will retrieve the management of the Midrasha.

I wouldn't have believed anyone that you are capable and ready to do this an action that in my opinion may bring the destruction of the Midrasha in Sde-Boker.

But I have had meetings. Several female students that have recently graduated the teacher seminar in the Midrasha and now became fresh teachers all over the country came to me to voice support for your claims. I heard these claims with a great sorrow not because I didn't like it since I'm capable of hearing claims I dislike. I was upset because those claims came from you.

You invited me to Even-Ari in Avdat and I enjoyed your invitation since I heard interesting things about the feasibility of fertilizing the desert without Yarden Yarkon and not through desalination of sea water. But all of this was just a preparation for your claims.

I happened to arrive <2> at the parliament for a few moments and two good acquaintances came to visit me.

One of them is a teacher Levin who is nowadays a member of the parliament and you recruited him to stir up the Teachers' Union against the Negev Committee.

The second person who has earned a respectful position in our modern history is a lawyer Klausner. You summoned him to prosecute the Negev Committee.

Although I honor your activities in the Midrasha and I do not have an authority to intervene in its management as a citizen I feel an obligation to do so since this enterprise that you managed to raise to such a level might be sacrificed in your war against the Negev Committee.

During the last meeting I spoke to you and you came up with three new demands claiming that if they are accepted by the Committee you'll agree to leave for studies at the end of the year.

At the meeting I did not want to acquiesce to these propositions but I could not understand how you came up with them and how it goes along with what should be done with the head of the Teachers' Union and with Mr. Klausner.

I do not know if there is any value in my writing to you nor do I think that my sorrow will change your mind. However as one who cherishes and admires your work in the development of the Midrasha for more than five years I feel an obligation not only towards the Midrasha but also to you to tell what lies on my heart.

Please do not bring the destruction of the Midrasha!

With respect and deep sorrow

D. Ben Gurion

Historic Background

Following David Ben-Gurion's vision to build a university in the Negev desert the construction of Midreshet-Ben Gurion began in 1963. The Midrasha was founded as a governmental corporation which owned the campus and ran all municipal affairs. The Negev Committee headed by Ya'akov Ya'akovson operated as the board of directors.

In 1964 the Negev Committee assigned lieutenant-colonel Avraham Zvion to become the principal of the Midrasha. With heart and soul Zvion built a vigorous community reaching over 1000 members. He started several different specialized schools i.e. high-school teacher seminars and recruited excellent teachers to join and promote the enterprise. Despite his unquestionable achievements Zvion's character was harsh and he did not take well to critics. After a dispute the Negev Committee decided to let him go. Zvion recruited the head of Teachers' Union and a member of the parliament Shalom Levin to sue the Negev Committee utilizing the services of the attorney Klausner. Zvion also had dozens of fresh teachers recently graduating the Midrasha teacher seminar on his side.

While approached by several of Zvion's supporters and feeling great appreciation for his achievements Ben-Gurion was greatly upset that Zvion's actions against the Committee might destroy the Midrasha. Zvion left the Midrasha in 1970.

Michael Even-Ari mentioned in the letter is a famous botanist. In 1959 he founded a research farm at the ruins of Avdat an ancient Nabatean city. His work explaining how the Nabataean culture was able to supply thousands of inhabitants in a similar arid climate with early runoff rainwater management was crucial for modern Israeli agriculture.
books
