A bound copy of a weekly souvenier publication which was produced to mark the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition which was held in Manchester. It remains the largest art exhibition ever to be held in the UK if not the World with over 16000 exhibits. It attracted over 1.3 million visitors in the 142 days it was open. The two chromolithographs show the building - a temporary iron-and-glass structure similar to the Crystal Palace in London 656 feet long and 200 feet wide with one central barrel vault 56 feet wide. Its selection and display of artworks had a formative influence on the public art collections that were then being established in the UK such as the National Gallery National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. WILLIAM JAMES LINTON the Victorian wood engraver poet artist book illustrator and social reformer moved into Brantwood in Coniston in 1852 and bought the house the following year. In 1857 his wife died and in the following year he married Eliza Lynn afterward known as Mrs Lynn Linton and returned to London. In 1864 he retired to Brantwood his wife remaining in London. Between 1858 and 1864 while Linton was living in London the house was let to Gerald Massey poet and Egyptologist. Linton emigrated with his children to America in 1867. John Ruskin bought the house in 1871. Before Ruskin came to Brantwood in the following year he arranged for repairs to the house the addition of a turret. Folio; approx. 12 x 10 inches. Completed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti after Gilchrist's death. Ex-library. Recased in brown cloth with original front and back leather covers affixed stamped in illustrated gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. The text is beautifully illustrated throughout "in facsimilé by W.J. Linton and in photolithography" and features many illustrations from Blake's original plates. Library numbers in white ink on spines blind stamp to title pages and at bottom of page 41 in both volumes. Otherwise the text blocks are in fine condition. Cloth binding is near fine with infinitesimal rubbing to corners heads and heels of spines. 1900P4583Berlin: Berlin Photographic Co. c.1900. Very Good. Notes: A rare signed hand coloured print of the Declaration of War between the Ottoman Empire and Austria. The painter is Sir James D. Linton and it is signed in pencil by him.<br>The Austro–Turkish War 1716–18.The Treaty of Karlowitz 1699 was not an acceptable long-standing agreement for the Ottoman Empire. Twelve years after Karlowitz the Turks began the long prospect of taking revenge for their defeat at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. This war resulted in the Austrians to maintain control over Belgrade and the Treaty of Passarowitz confirmed their gains in 1699 leaving the Turks with control over the south bank of the Danube river. The War led to the loss of Austrian holdings in Italy because of their support in the Balkans.
