A rare broadside printing of this poem by Linton in memory of his close friend and publisher fellow radical James Watson. Written after Linton's removal to the U.S. the text is dated at the end "U.S. Dec 20 1874." Linton's early publication history in Britain was closely connected with Watson dating from the years of Linton's first major endeavor the radical weekly THE NATION. Folded across the middle edges with minor tears light use and foxing at edges</p> <br /> <p>First separate printing of these two poems the first on the cession of Venetia to Italy by Napoleon and the second re: Bismarck Garibaldi and other affairs signed "Spartacus." Written during the struggle for Italian independence and the rise of German nationalism Linton a printer poet engraver and friend of Mazzini published numerous articles on liberal subjects from his press in Branston. </p> <br /> <p>This broadside appears to be a proof printing of the two poems and could very well be from Linton's press in Brantwood. OCLC reports only copies in the Linton Archive at Yale the source for the printing date of 1866 for the proof sheet.</p> . Printed for the Author unknown

Completed by Dante Gabriel Rossetti after Gilchrist's death. Ex-library. Recased in brown cloth with original front and back leather covers affixed stamped in illustrated gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. The text is beautifully illustrated throughout "in facsimilé by W.J. Linton and in photolithography" and features many illustrations from Blake's original plates. Library numbers in white ink on spines blind stamp to title pages and at bottom of page 41 in both volumes. Otherwise the text blocks are in fine condition. Cloth binding is near fine with infinitesimal rubbing to corners heads and heels of spines. Library pouches and newspaper clippings neatly affixed to endpapers. 5 3/4 x 9 inches. 657 combined pages plus plates. <br/><br/> Macmillan hardcover
