This is a very good 3 volume hardcover set in the original light green cloth and vellum spines publisher's bindings, titled and decorated in gilt. Top page-edges all gilt. All volumes uniformly bound with their leather spine labels intact, volumes 1 & 2 labels are a little sunned (light brown), volume 3 label is dark brown. Volume 1: Italy, x, 200 text pages + 6 color plates including frontispiece + many black & white photographic plates + drawings and plans in the text. Volume 2: England, xii, 228 text pages, + 4 color plates + many black & white photographic plates + drawings and plans in the text. Volume 3: France, xiii, 220 text pages + 3 color plates + many black & white photographic plates + drawings and plans in the text. All volumes very clean internally, a few tan spots to endpapers, or slight offsetting to endpapers. Outside the vellum spines are clean, gilt titles bright. Two spines a little toned to a honey color, the third still cream colored vellum. A little faint soil externally, but overall a very clean beautiful 3 volume set in the original bindings and not x-library, or marked in any way. This is a very good hardcover copy in the familiar green paper-covered boards with gilt device to the front cover, and black leather spine with red panel printed with gilt titles. Text in German. This is one of the best one volume surveys of European architecture at the beginning of the 20th century. The work of over 100 architects is surveyed and classified by building types and styles. Profusely illustrated with 25 tipped-in color plates mounted on stiff black paper, and hundreds of black & white photos, plans and drawings. Thumbnail biographies. Index. The edges of the boards are rubbed, the corners a bit worn, but the leather spine is fine with no fraying or fading, or marks of any kind. Inside the book is generally very clean, but a couple of pages have edges or corners creased. Stern, professor of Architecture at Columbia University. This is one of the more knowledgeable and useful guides not only to the architecture but the fascinating social history of New York during this period. The authors discuss in detail the relationships of the people who commissioned buildings and interiors and the architects, designers, and craftsmen who provided them. Jusquau IIIe siècle de notre ère. Les témoignages livrés par le sous-sol révèlent la présence de maisons dès le milieu du VIe siècle. Dautres habitations leur succèdent durant la période républicaine. Lune delles est achevée depuis peu lorsque, dans les années 30 du Ier siècle avant notre ère, un personnage important fait bâtir une domus luxueuse qui gomme tous les aménagements antérieurs. Moins de cent ans plus tard, un tremblement de terre provoque leffondrement de cette demeure et, peu après, le relief va être remodelé par la construction dune grande terrasse artificielle sur laquelle se dressera un corps du palais impérial flavien. Mais les remblais employés pour réaliser cet aménagement gigantesque subissent des tassements, imposant dintervenir à de multiples reprises tout au long du IIe siècle pour réparer et transformer ce quartier de la résidence impériale. Un incendie - celui de 191 vraisemblablement - signe sa fin et, rasé, il laisse place au temple dédié pendant quelques années à Sol Elagabalus, un sanctuaire qui pourrait avoir remplacé un édifice plus ancien. La succession des événements a été établie à partir des résultats recueillis dans lun des secteurs du chantier de fouille réalisé par lÉcole française de Rome en collaboration avec la Soprintendenza archeologica de 1985 à 1998. Lexposition des résultats est précédée par un rappel des circonstances qui ont présidé au lancement du projet de recherche, ainsi que des solutions adoptées sur le terrain puis au cours des autres phases du travail.
