There is block of repeated pagination for page numbers 41-48 with different text apparently a printer's error as the text flows throughout. There in no font cover or front end-paper the volume starts with a title-page with vignette and followed by a secondary plain title-page first title page gives both publishers second title gives only C Taylor and date of 1786. The front cover is missing the rear marbled cover is present but detached the leather spine is attached and has wear and some loss at both ends. The text block is holding but the whole should be rebound for its protection The pages are uncut untrimmed and some are rubbed and a little darkened at the overhanging edges. The title-page is a little darkened edges pages are clean with occasional freckle there is some freckling to some of the plates. 228 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: under 1 kg. Rare. <br/><br/>This is vol. 1 only: Subsequent volumes appeared into the early 1800s. Fowler 340 . "After their return to London in 1755 Stuart worked on the first volume of Antiquities of Athens which was published in 1762. He wrote and revised the text had the illustrations engraved and designed a binding as well as painting views of Greece and Pola in gouache for exhibition. The first volume contained details of just five buildings in the northern part of Athens but more were promised in further volumes. The first volume had more than 500 subscribers. Few were architects or builders which limited the impact of the work as a design sourcebook. It was however well received by scholars antiquaries and gentleman amateurs. The presentation binding that Stuart designed for Antiquities of Athens had a Neo-Classical design and inspired architect Robert Adam to design similar presentation bindings for his work on the antiquities of Spalatro. Antiquities of Athens helped shape the European understanding of ancient Greece. It brought an entirely new design vocabulary to 18th-century European architecture and design and later became an essential sourcebook for the 19th-century Greek Revival - V&A exhibit on Stuart in 2007." Most of these engravings were engraved by James Basire who ten years later taught engraving to William Blake. I count 78 engravings including head and tail-pieces and two folding plates. Contemporary full leather with banded spine and blind decoration to covers residue of gilt decoration against bands no spine-label. Loss to leather on both front and rear covers and significant wear front cover is detached rear is attached but fragile. Internal binding is sound. End-papers are darkened and marked. Upper and lower margins of pages are marked by water stains but pages are otherwise clean and text is bright. Plates have crisp and clear definition and are free from foxing. Quantity Available: 1.
