Abundantly illustrated with attractive black and white photographic plates. "A century after the inception of the first public parks there is a revival of interest in them and many large and admirable recent examples exist. There is also an increasing need for amenities for recreation. Dr. Chadwick approaches these subjects both visually and historically and draws his examples from Britain Europe and North and South America. He recounts the history of public parks and illustrates how their landscape was transformed by a changing approach to design. He indicates the park's changing function in the community and brings his story up to date by showing a wide range of modern work." - from dust jacket. Prior owner's inkstamp inside each board and upon top edge. Bit of writing inside front board otherwise book clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Tight and square. Brown printed softcovers dark brown lettering on covers yapp fore-edges minor edgewear light chipping still a VG bright copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce installment in this uncommon architecture magazine with extended photo spread on the Panama-California Exposition held in San Diego to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and San Diego as the first port-of-call. This Exposition is famed for its Mission Revival Style Architecture which over a decade later would inspire the architect Richard Requa. Other architectural articles and descriptions focus on the apartment house designed by H.R. Wilson architect of Chicago Illinois and the Miss Harriet Crandall residence in Chicago IL. Goodhue 1869-1924 was the Advisory and Consulting Architect for the Panama-California Exposition and his designs together with Carleton Winslow for the Spanish Colonial Revival & Churrigueresque style set the architectural style for the Exposition and many are still in use at Balboa Park San Diego today. Individual issues of this Trades Publishing Co. production are quite scarce and even the few institutional holdings of this periodical tend to be incomplete from 1912-1915. 2007015012London: Black Dog Publishing 2007. New Edition. . Card Covers. Very Good. 189 pages b/w illustrations plans. Originally published by Academy Editions in 1995. In The Other Tradition St John Wilson sets out to examine the underlying themes of modern architecture assessing their impact influence and continuing development. Rather than positioning Modernism as a completed historical moment that occurred in the past and that was formulated in terms of abstract theory and in no way responding to the historic role of architecture as a practical art and the unpredictable necessities of life Wilson argues for a continuing tradition an "uncompleted project" sustained against CIAM's rigid orthodoxy by a "resistance movement" exemplified by architects such as Alvar Aalto Hans Scharoun Hugo Häring and Frank Lloyd Wright. Figures like Aalto and Scharoun couldn't compete with Le Corbusier's powers on the soapbox and showed little inclination to do so. In a sense The Other Tradition is the manifesto that these laconic masters never wrote. Minor wear to covers contents fine unmarked.
